Job Details
Join the British Science Association Council
We’re looking for two new Trustees to join the board of the British Science Association, both current or recently practicing scientists with experience of science engagement and commitment to our mission. These are volunteer roles governing our medium-sized UK charity.
The British Science Association believes that all of society should be included in science. Through our education, engagement and policy & advocacy programmes, we work with partners across the UK to bring people and science together in ways that will have a lasting, positive impact on communities, research and society.
Your role
As a Trustee, your role is to work with other Council members to set the strategic direction for the charity and oversee the effective running of the organisation. You will be expected to act as an ambassador for the BSA with our key external audiences and to demonstrate leadership on the BSA’s commitment to improving diversity and inclusion in science.
What we are looking for
We are currently looking to recruit for two practising scientists with experience of science engagement to join Council, ideally one from academia and one from industry. To get the most out of being on the BSA’s Council, we suggest that you have a passion for our vision and goals and can commit to the time and effort required. Our Council members need strategic vision, independent judgement, and an ability to work effectively as part of a team.
We are a UK-wide charity and are interested in regional representation and diversity of mindset in addition to aiming for Council to be demographically representative of the UK. We are keen to hear from people from communities who are currently under-represented on Council, including people from ethnic minority backgrounds and people with disabilities.
Terms of Appointment
This is a volunteer (pro bono) role and there is no salary. Reasonable out of pocket expenses may be claimed on submission of appropriate documentation.
We are a UK-wide charity and are interested in regional representation and diversity of mindset in addition to aiming for Council to be demographically representative of the UK.
The initial appointment term is three years. Council members are eligible for re-appointment at the expiry of that term, for one additional term only.
Closing date: 23:59 on Sunday 1st December 2024
Interviews: w/c 20th January 2025
You will be informed as soon as possible after the application deadline whether you have been selected for interview.

Company
The British Science Association's (BSA) vision is a future where science is more relevant, representative and connected to society.
Science is more than a body of research, people working in a lab or even the wider industry that surrounds that.
It’s also a way of asking questions, making decisions, and understanding the world. Science is a tool that everyone in the UK could and should be able to use. For us to grow as a society, it’s essential that we all do.
Our vision and mission
The science sector has many structural and system-wide barriers that it’s time to remove. We’re working with business leaders, policy makers, scientists, community leaders, teachers, and many others to say goodbye to the old stereotypes of who a scientist ‘should be’. With their help, we’re bringing more voices into the conversation, to help more people see science (in all its forms) as a relevant part of their lives.
The UK is bursting with potential and we’re helping to unlock it.
We’re striving for a future where everyone is represented and has their voice heard on the issues that matter to them. So, science goes beyond being a lesson at school and becomes a way of thinking and making decisions – about looking after our health, protecting the planet and choosing and using new technology.
