Assistant Director External Affairs and International

We are looking for a new Assistant Director of External Affairs and International, to join the team in this rewarding hybrid-working role.

Position: Assistant Director External Affairs and International (1550)

Location: South East/London Hybrid (with national travel for external meetings and regular travel to the London hub in Blackfriars and the South East Hub, in Horsham (estimated travel to the hub 2 days per week)

Salary: £53,221 to £70,962 per annum

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week, flexible working available

Contract: Permanent

Closing Date: 28th August 2024. First stage interviews will take place in person, in London on the 6th of September and will include a presentation and also a panel interview.

Second stage interviews will take place remotely on the 27th of September.

About the Role

The Assistant Director External Affairs and International will be working as part of the Policy, Prevention and Campaigns team, reporting into the Director of Policy, Prevention and Campaigns.

The Policy, Prevention and Campaigns department are responsible for all influencing, campaigning and prevention activities. Their work is directed towards the government, corporate organisations and the public.

You will provide leadership to the team and will focus on the delivery and implementation of the developing International Strategy. Working closely with the Director of Policy, Prevention and Campaigns and other senior leaders to develop and execute strategies that enhance the charity’s visibility, influence, and engagement with major stakeholders, the public and international networks.

You will support a step change in the advocacy work as the charity enters it’s third century. From campaigning, to lobbying, to international relations we are looking for someone to increase the ambition and visibility of this work.

This role has a strong internal focus, especially initially, looking at influencing and driving change across the organisation in ways of working and collaboration. You will also drive innovation in ways of working across the division, including piloting new approaches.

About You

To succeed within this role, it is essential that you have a proven ability to create both societal change and a change to ways of working within organisations.

You must have proven experience of leading on major campaigns, which have had a big reach and have led to significant change, such as a change in legislation.

You must also have very strong, proven influencing, negotiating and relationship building skills, along with experience of:

 

  • Building and managing internal change programmes and organisational infrastructure projects.
  • Influencing public opinion and creating behaviour change.
  • Bringing innovative ideas and approaches into organisations.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations and reports to high-level audiences.
  • International policy work and the complexities of influencing and negotiating through inter and intra-governmental bodies.
  • Budget and project management.
  • Legislation that impacts on animal welfare and an in-depth knowledge of relevant national and international regulations and the scientific, ethical and social/political issues.
  • People management
