HOURS

80% full-time equivalent post (28 hours per week).

SALARY

£30,930 per annum (pro-rata), rising to co-op director salary (at the time) following the successful completion of the 6 month probation period.

REPORTING

The Senior Bookkeeper is a member of the Central Services Team, and will work alongside the accountant and report to the Finance Group.

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for recording and maintaining the financial transactions of New Internationalist Co-operative Ltd. and its subsidiaries New Internationalist Publications Ltd. and Myriad Editions Ltd. S/he will assist the accountant with the financial operations of the organisation.

The Senior Bookkeeper is expected to take part in Co-op duties and will become a director of New Internationalist Publications Ltd. after the completion of a probation period.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out general bookkeeping duties for all three organisations 
  • Produce timely financial information and data for the accountant and co-operative, as required
  • Accurately process all supplier invoices and payments in a weekly payment run
  • Raise sales invoices, process receipts and manage credit control
  • Adhere to Making Tax Digital requirements by compiling daily VAT receipts for the Magazine and the Ethical Shop
  • Manage company bank accounts
  • Run the monthly payroll and administer pensions
  • Prepare information for quarterly management and statutory year-end accounts.
  • Ensure monthly bank reconciliation and monitor debtors
  • Work with the Fundraising and Engagement Coordinator and the Accountant to maintain an accurate database of our shareholders/investors
  • Maintain accurate financial records for grant fund management, as required
  • On publishing side of the business, process royalties; payments and income and associated tasks
  • Regularly review the company’s risks and consequent insurance arrangements to provide adequate insurance cover
  • Lead on any other activities relating to financial management of the co-operative, such as filing statutory paperwork with relevant agencies

CO-OPERATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

As a member of the co-operative, the Senior Bookkeeper is expected to share in all the responsibilities this involves. These include acting as a Director of the company, and taking turns in chairing and minuting of co-op meetings. Participation in the wider business of the co-operative is expected, and all staff are expected to take responsibility for their own development and training

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential requirements

  • A minimum AAT/ICB level 3 qualification
  • Minimum 5-years bookkeeping experience
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting best practices, principles and procedures
  • Proficiency in  cloud based accounting software such as QuickBooks and Xero
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software
  • Excellent numeracy and attention to detail
  • Well-organised and strong time management skills
  • Ability to communicate complex data to staff 
  • Strong ethics, integrity and transparency
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to use own initiative
  • Comfortable working in a team or on your own
  • Ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders

Desirable

  • Business skills and commercial awareness
  • Familiarity with book keeping and accounting procedures of at least one of the following
    • magazine subscriptions,
    • online retail,
    • book publishing
    • grant funding 
    • third sector
  • Multi-currency bookkeeping
