Trustee
Eastbourne, East Sussex

This is a great opportunity to become a trustee of an important local charity.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice is a well-loved and respected local charity which provides end of life care to the people of Eastbourne and surrounding areas of East Sussex.

Our vision is for a community where people talk openly about dying, live well until the end of their lives and where nobody dies alone, afraid or in pain. With a paid workforce of 200+ and over 500 volunteers, we support over 1,500 people at the end of their lives, plus those close to them, with person-centred support for their physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Our annual turnover is c.£9m, and we are rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Our current strategy, Living Well at the End of Life, has a strong focus on reducing inequalities in access to end-of-life care. This, in turn, will improve the quality and experience for people at the end of life in the communities we support. To achieve this, we need to grow the level of support, financial and otherwise, from our communities.

As a result of some recent retirements, we are looking for up to three people to join our current board of trustees. We seek individuals who are forward-thinking, fair-minded and committed to collective decision-making and accountability.

St Wilfrid’s constitution allows for a Board of Trustees of between six and twelve people, elected for three-year periods, with the option to be reappointed for up to three consecutive terms.

There are typically four board meetings per year, as well as a whole day Strategy Awayday and an evening strategy session. Trustees are also expected to sit on one or more of the sub-committees (Audit, Clinical Governance, People, and Income Generation).

Taking into account Board and sub-committee meetings, plus reading and other ad hoc communication, the time commitment is a minimum of a day per month.

It is not essential to have been in a formal governance role before, we will offer full induction and ongoing training for those selected. You must also be able to commit to the values of the hospice (Compassionate, Professional, Progressive and Respectful) and be available to attend evening board and subcommittee meetings, the annual away day and some fundraising events.

We are particularly looking for people with a background and experience in the following areas:

- Organisational development and workforce.
- Working with organisations to become digitally enabled.
- Using perspectives acquired in the world of business to achieve organisational success.
- Working across clinical and social care systems.
- The importance of culture and inclusion and working in collaboration.

St. Wilfrid's Hospice is working on a programme to make sure that we have a culture that includes and values everyone, no matter their background. We invite those who can help us as we strive to create a more inclusive and diverse environment.

If you wish to apply or learn more, please select the apply button shown below before the closing date.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 7th April and interviews will be held in person at the hospice on Thursday 18th April.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
