Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with additional needs and their families?

Skylarks Charity is seeking individuals with diverse skills and experiences to join our board of trustees. We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise in Digital, Fundraising, Legal, and Operations, as well as organisational development.

About Skylarks Charity:

Skylarks Charity is an award-winning organization dedicated to supporting children with additional needs and their families. Recognised for our outstanding contributions, we have received prestigious awards such as the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2018, The National Diversity Award for Community Organisations 2020, Finalist for Children and Young People Award 2022, and winners of The Best Children's Disability Charity at the Non-Profit Organisation Award 2023.

Skylarks is expanding its reach, with over 5000 registered children accessing our services and a growing community. We have recently secured a second site and are poised to open in 2024, furthering our mission to provide vital support to children with additional needs and their families.

About the Role:

As a trustee, you will play a crucial role in guiding Skylarks Charity towards achieving its strategic objectives. Your expertise and insight will contribute to our organisation's governance, development, and sustainability. We welcome individuals with lived experience of having children with additional needs or with disabilities themselves to apply, as your unique perspective will enrich our board discussions and decision-making processes.

Board meetings occur approximately five times a year and are conducted through both online and in-person formats. Trustees are assigned to participate in at least one committee, ensuring pertinent discussions on matters concerning the operations and governance of the charity. Additionally, committee meetings are convened between board meetings as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to ensure the effective governance and management of Skylarks Charity.
  • Collaborate with fellow trustees and senior management to develop and implement organisational strategies, policies, and initiatives.
  • Utilise your expertise in Digital, Fundraising, Legal, or Operations to support the growth and development of Skylarks Charity.
  • Act as ambassadors for Skylarks, promoting our mission and values within the community and beyond.
  • Attend trustee meetings, contribute actively to discussions, and participate in sub-committees as required.
  • Uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in all aspects of governance and decision-making.

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of an award-winning organisation dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of local children and families.
  • Contribute your skills and expertise towards shaping the future direction of Skylarks Charity.
  • Work alongside a passionate and dedicated team committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Gain valuable experience in governance and leadership, enhancing your professional development and personal growth.

Skylarks are particularly keen on hearing from applicants that have a connection to children with additional needs, or have a disability themselves.

Join Skylarks Charity and help shape a brighter future for children with additional needs and their families!

At Skylarks, our vision is to help create a world where children with additional needs can thrive.

Our Story

Skylarks provides a supportive and active community. We care for the whole family, providing opportunities to join in, develop and feel empowered. We want to remove the isolation that can be felt by families and their children who have a disability or additional needs. We are based in Richmond upon Thames but have an open-door policy. Anyone, from anywhere, is welcome!

The charity was originally founded as Me too & Co by a group of parent volunteers in 2006 to fill a gap in the local community where there was a lack of support. You can read more about our founder and beginnings here. In April 2019, we rebranded and officially changed our name to Skylarks Charity (or Skylarks for short) with the support of our corporate partner Haymarket Media Group. Most recently we have been awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of the wonderful team of dedicated volunteers we have supporting our cause.

Over 3000 families have now registered to use our services and the list is growing! Over the past 15 years the organisation has continued to grow. We have expanded from first providing inclusive play sessions to now offering a wide range of therapies, activities and services that are often otherwise inaccessible to families. These include services such as hydrotherapy, counselling, inclusive activities like drama and karate and free advice for Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Our independence as a charity means we are able to develop our programme in line with the needs of our families; something that has always been and remains important to us. We do not apply for or receive any statutory funding from government or local authorities.

Why Join Skylarks?

It’s an exciting time to join our team as we look to spread our wings, expanding to deliver to more families across the surrounding boroughs.

From meeting inspiring children and families to watching them grow and flourish, Aaron Guiver, managing director, describes why Skylarks is such a rewarding charity to work for. Read full story here.

Skylarks has continued to grow significantly over the last few years, with a 30% year on year increase in the number of services we deliver to families. Skylarks believe in innovating and adapting its services depending on the needs of the families we support. We have a small but dedicated team and we are always looking to add exciting new members to our inclusive team.
