This is a rare opportunity to lead a small, dynamic charity team, shaping the future of Children’s Cancer North following its launch in May 2021. Children’s Cancer North is the leading children’s cancer charity in the North of England, working to make life better for children with cancer. We launched in 2021 following the merger of two well-established regional charities (North of England Children’s Cancer Research and Children’s Cancer Fund) with 40 years of history in childhood cancer research and support. We work in partnership with Newcastle University - funding research carried out within the Centre for Cancer, a Newcastle University centre of research excellence, and directly supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer.
You will work alongside the charity Trustees to develop and deliver the business strategy to ensure the ongoing sustainability, growth and success of Children’s Cancer North. We are looking for someone who can operate confidently at all levels, demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills with a pragmatic approach to problem solving. You will be a strong figurehead for the charity and a positive ambassador, leader and role model for staff and volunteers.

- Lead the Children's Cancer North team including appointment of new staff, tailoring development opportunities for each team member, carrying out regular supervisions, setting and achieving financial targets and preparing management reports to monitor progress against objectives
- Lead on financial and budget planning for Children's Cancer North ensuring that all expenditure is within limits, achieving a strong return on investment and delivering maximum value for money
- Work with the Board of Trustees to ensure good governance of the charity, enabling them to fulfil their duties and responsibilities
- Work with the Board of Trustees to lead on the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies and procedures to ensure best practice across the charity and fulfilment of legal, statutory and regulatory responsibilities
- Lead an ambitious multi-year fundraising strategy with the goal of substantially increasing the volume, value and range of support for Children's Cancer North
- Design and implement innovative, evidence-based regular giving appeals and campaigns with a focus on donor acquisition and retention. These will include mass market appeals, community and event fundraising, payroll giving and legacy fundraising
- Identify the need for specialist agency support as part of the fundraising strategy and to appoint, negotiate with and set objectives for agencies working with CCN in support of our strategic goals
- Deliver an effective donor relations plan for regular giving, legacy and corporate donors in order to ensure an exceptional giving experience
- Oversee the delivery of regular, tailored digital communications to donors and supporters. This will include content generation that follows the tone of voice, brand guidelines and visual identity for CCN
- Develop a system for analysis and insights on donor behaviour using CCN's CRM database
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory guidelines for ethical public fundraising, including UK GDPR, the Fundraising Code of Practice and the University’s policies for ethical fundraising and acceptance of donations
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the fundraising profession, providing the CCN team with strategic insight on emerging trends
- Ensure a professional and quality service is delivered by Children’s Cancer North to attract and retain donors
- Establish and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders to champion the charity, extend reach and increase income
- Develop working relationships with the University Advancement team to develop new and improved processes and share good practice
- Prepared to work flexible hours including occasional evenings and weekends and to be willing to travel across the UK if required
- Undertake other tasks and projects in support of the mission of Children's Cancer North
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering an effective organisational vision and strategy
- Strong and proven leadership and performance management skills, including leading staff through a process of change, motivating and engaging staff and addressing staff performance issues where necessary
- Substantial experience of managing projects and staff within the voluntary sector, with an excellent understanding of best practice
- Authoritative knowledge of the work practices, processes and procedures related to fundraising and the broader charitable sector
- Experience of working directly with a Board of Trustees or other committees
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across different audiences
- Outstanding organisational skills
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise work
- Strong financial management experience, utilising resources for their greatest impact, and able to manage and control budgets
- Understanding of the regulations and national codes of practice relating to fundraising and charity operations
