Our client, a nature conservation charity, is seeking a Head of Business Engagement to lead their work in transforming the private sector’s role in addressing the nature and climate crisis and to build significant strategic partnerships with the organisation.

About the role

In this role you would be an influential leader able to shape the private sector response to the nature and climate crisis and develop significant strategic partnerships for the organisation. You will collaborate with colleagues across multiple disciplines in the organisation to maximise their existing relationships and broker new and exciting opportunities at a scale not previously achieved. Their private sector work stretches from their existing commercial operations, through their policy and advocacy outreach with companies and on to their direct corporate fundraising, as well as their sector advice, specific food and farming initiatives and their nascent conservation investment work.

This charity wants to build on existing successful partnerships in the food and building sectors as well as develop game-changing relationships across multiple new sectors.

Duties include (non-exhaustive):

  • You will lead the organization’s work with the private sector, shaping the charity’s engagement with businesses and be proactive in generating new relationships;
  • You will work with all of the charity's private sector facing teams to ensure cross-organisational coherence and transparency;
  • You will help develop and embed the appropriate skills and standards across private sector facing teams, including working collaboratively with teams to elicit the pace required to match that of the private sector;
  • You will establish and grow a small team bringing this work to life, including overseeing their existing Corporate Partnerships team;
  • You will effectively set, monitor and report on progress against targets, seeking constant organisational improvements.

*You can be based anywhere in the UK, including in one of the charity's offices or partly from home, but regular travel will be a key part of the role.

What the organisation need from you:

As the charity's Head of Business Engagement, you will lead an exciting new programme of work, reporting to the Executive Director of Income and Conservation Investment and with a mandate from the Executive Board and trustees to prioritise this work. You will have the opportunity to shape the charity's approach to engaging businesses and set this team up to deliver successfully and at pace.

You will be someone who enjoys creating strategies but then also ensuring they are implemented, developing people, teams and partnerships, a real team player who is unfazed by working in a busy team, across and with all parts of the organisation, and who wants to build support for nature’s recovery and the organisation.

You will be an experienced leader with a strong track record of inspiring dispersed teams who can work collaboratively to help shape the charity's strategic direction around the private sector. You will be able to motivate colleagues to support organisational goals of significantly increasing their engagement with and support from the private sector.

You will have strong business acumen and insight into what businesses want and how they operate, with a good understanding of how the private sector is engaging with issues around sustainability and climate.

You will be confident engaging and influencing at senior leadership level and growing long term, mutually beneficial relationships.

The successful candidate will lead a team that delivers exceptional partnerships with the private sector that not only generate seven figure financial support but also deliver on cross-organisational conservation priorities.

You will have:

  • Extensive experience engaging with business partners and growing long term relationships which deliver financial and charitable impact;
  • Proven experience of operating at senior management level including leading, managing, and developing teams;
  • Ability to co-ordinate and engage internal, cross disciplinary teams behind a common purpose;
  • Excellent change manager, able to bring about and embed change at pace;
  • Demonstrable experience in developing, implementing, monitoring and reporting against business plans, and budgets;
  • Proven experience in meeting ambitious targets and delivering engagement at scale;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present, influence and represent the organisation to a wide variety of audiences including experience of advocacy and influencing to a senior level;
  • Experience in engaging with diverse audiences;
  • Good knowledge of how businesses are engaging on issues of sustainability and climate.
