About the role

As Director Social Care Operations you will lead and develop SSAFA’s professional welfare services for service personnel, children and families from the Armed Forces communities.

Keeping the client at the heart of future strategy, you will be aware of the social care and welfare needs within the Armed Forces community, the current welfare provisions and promote SSAFA as the go-to organisation to deliver these essential services.

SSAFA is proud to have delivered the RAF Personal Support & Social Work Service for 32 years and intend to continue for many years to come, harnessing our in-depth knowledge of current issues and our ability to adapt to meet changing needs. The contract relet for this service will start in 2023, in addition we would want to be in a position to apply for any fresh defence social welfare contracts that might be let in the coming years. Securing defence welfare contracts is critical for the future of the Charity.

SSAFA’s Adoption service has an outstanding Ofsted rating and was awarded Rising Star Agency 2021 by New Family Social but there is always more to be done to support the Armed Forces community to grow their family.

This role comes with a unique opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives going through challenging times and what you get is a great sense of pride and fulfilment.

About the team

Social Care is one of the largest with disparate services in SSAFA made up of many services i.e., RAF Personal Support and Social Work Service (PS&SWS); an Ofsted-regulated Adoption service for the Armed Forces community; housing provision for women and children escaping domestic violence; support groups for the bereaved and other vulnerable groups; the Ministry of Defence’s Additional Needs & Disabilities Advisory service.

The team of over 70 employees is spread out all over the UK. They are dedicated, professional and passionate about what they do.  Many of them have been with SSAFA for a number of years which is a testament to how much they believe in the work they do.

About you

You’ll be an empowering leader with a vision to succeed, spearheading the integration of the welfare and wellbeing services, while influencing teams across the organisation to work collaboratively. What’s more, you will be commercially astute with substantial experience to deliver savings from our commercial contracts to deploy in SSAFA’s charitable work which is critical for sustainability and growth.

You will have excellent stakeholder management skills and a keen eye for new business opportunities which align with SSAFA’s strategic aims.  You will share your vision with your high performing team and lead them to achieve significant and sustainable service improvements.  Enhancing the safeguarding culture across the whole of SSAFA is a priority and you will find creative ways to educate the workforce in a way that it is fully embedded in the way we operate.

About SSAFA

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has been providing practical, emotional, and financial support to our Forces and their families since 1885. Last year our teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 65,000 people in need, from Second World War veterans to those who have served in more recent conflicts or are still currently serving, and their families.

SSAFA understands that behind every uniform is a person. We are here for that person – any time they need us, in any way they need us, for as long as they need us.

Diversity and Inclusion at SSAFA

SSAFA exists to support a diverse range of beneficiaries within the armed forces community, and we believe diversity within our teams is key to ensuring we can deliver our services effectively. We thrive on differences and believe it is critical to our success as a worldwide charity. SSAFA is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace that seeks to recruit, develop and retain the most talented people from a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We therefore encourage applications from all genders, races, religions, ages and sexual orientations, as well as parents, veterans, people living with disabilities, and any other groups that could bring diverse perspectives to our business.

SSAFA is committed to using the Disclosure & Barring Service to ensure we, as an employer, safeguard those we serve.
