Company

Treloar Trust is a charity and one of the country’s leading providers of education, care, therapy, medical support and independence training to disabled young people. Treloar’s, together with its school and college, is based near Alton in East Hampshire. Founded in 1907, the charity has an annual income of over £20m and employs around 600 people.

Treloar’s was founded over 100 years ago by the then Lord Mayor of London, Sir William Purdie. In 1908 he opened a school and hospital for children with non-pulmonary tuberculosis in Alton. Still based near the town, Treloar’s now consists of a school for children and young people with physical disabilities and a specialist college for disabled young people over the age of 16.

The school and college are part of Treloar Trust and both located in the village Holybourne near Alton. They are managed as separate operating divisions but share a range of services run centrally by the Trust such as fundraising, human resources, finance, computer services, transport and marketing.

Treloar’s school is a non-maintained special school for pupils with mainly physical disabilities between 2 and 16 years of age. Pupils are from UK and overseas and the school has room for over 70 residential and 40 day students. Currently 68% of school and college students have cerebral palsy, over 90% are wheelchair users and more than 40% are non-verbal. But both institutions welcome young people with a wide range of physical conditions, including sensory and cognitive impairments.

Treloar College is a specialist college for young people with physical disabilities aged 16 and over. Facilities are designed make life easier and more productive. All classrooms, bedrooms, eating and study areas are equipped with students’ needs in mind. Alumni have gone on to undertake a range of activities including university education, work in the voluntary sector and competing in the Paralympics.

Apart from education, Treloar’s provides many additional services. Its clinical services team delivers outreach services for children and young adults with a disability to sixth form colleges, schools, specialist centres, individuals, disability groups and charities. Services cover areas such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and speech & language therapy.

Due to its origin, the charity has strong links with the City of London. Each Lord Mayor automatically becomes a trustee of Treloar’s and makes an annual visit to the charity. Treloar’s also stages a Mansion House concert every year in the presence of the Lord Mayor or their representative.

Treloar’s has a comprehensive professional development system. The College was shortlisted for the Association of College’s Beacon Award in 2016 and its staff training commended as among the best in the further education sector. Treloar’s offers employment in areas such as care work, therapy, fundraising, administration, nursing and education.
