Director of Finance and Corporate Resources

Location:  Garden Organic, Ryton-On-Dunsmore nr. Coventry    (Hybrid working can be considered)

Reporting To: Chief Executive Officer

Hours: 35 hours per week (Full time)

Salary: £45,000 to £55,000 dependent on experience

Qualifications: ACCA/CIMA/ACA Accountant required.

Experience: Charity experience as a staff member or trustee is essential.

We are seeking a Finance & Corporate Resources Director with strong charity experience who wants to enable us to have greater impact on reversing biodiversity decline in gardens and community spaces throughout the UK. 

Our charity conducts research into organic growing; shares expertise and knowledge with our members and the general public; campaigns on key issues such as pesticide use and peat-free compost; conserves rare vegetable seed through our unique Heritage Seed Library and runs community programmes. 

With a new three year business plan now in place, managing our resources to meet our ambition will be the primary focus of this role. You’ll need to know your way around project and programme finance and staffing; key stakeholders and partnerships; and how to get best value from all types of income to the charity.  You’ll be experienced in reporting to the board and working closely with the Chief Executive and you’ll have examples of how you’ve been canny with resources to enable positive impact. 

You will lead a committed finance team alongside our HR function which is part in-house, part outsourced.  You will be one of four directors serving on our Executive team, reporting to the Chief Executive.

Role Description

  • Direct the financial management for the charity and its trading arm including budget control and external financial reporting as well as financial governance
  • Oversee production of annual report and accounts and facilitate annual audit
  • Lead contract negotiations for all aspects of the charity’s work.
  • Apply innovative ideas to enable best value for money and implement effective cash flow strategies
  • Enable financial literacy across the organisation, coaching and training staff in how best to manage their budgets and negotiate with funders
  • Direct the Human Resources function with primary goal of ensuring all policies and procedures are in place to underpin a happy and engaged workforce
  • Lead on liaison of lease for charity offices and oversee office management and ensure best practice for both office and non-office based staff
  • Implement a workflow to facilitate learning and development for all staff
  • Champion best practice in the work place, including but not limited to equality, diversity and inclusion, and supporting health and wellbeing at work.
  • Manage relationships with key suppliers, including landlord, auditors, bankers and investment managers. 
  • Ensure the charity is meeting all compliance and reporting obligations
  • Proactively manage and retain our comprehensive risk register together with Executive Team colleagues. 

Profile

  • Charity experience essential – as trustee or staff member (or both)
  • Fully qualified in accounting practices with relevant and strong experience of financial accounting and financial management. 
  • Experience of devising and implementing staff policies, overseeing contractual terms of employment and ensuring best practice in HR (see application pack for more details).
  • Team player, with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Enabler, problem-preventer, pragmatic and solutions orientated
  • Assured manner able to liaise with people at all levels
  • High degree of integrity, confidentiality and interpersonal skills necessary to earn respect and cooperation from all stakeholders

Package

  • Salary range £45-55K dependent on experience
  • 35 hours per week
  • 25 days annual leave, plus 3 days added Christmas and New Year when the office is closed, plus bank holidays
