The Mayor of London’s Civil Society & Sport unit supports Londoners through social action, volunteering, and sport and physical activity. We are looking to appoint a Senior Manager for our Civil Society & Volunteering team.
This is a really exciting time to be leading the development and delivery of the Mayor’s work in London’s civil society. Your contribution will be central to supporting the capital’s communities to engage in volunteering and civil society. You will be key in shaping the unit’s wider work to meet the Mayor’s commitments as well as the aims of the London Recovery Programme (especially the Building Strong Communities mission; you can find out more here https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/recovery_programme_overview.pdf).
You will be great at establishing and maintaining close working relationships with senior decision-makers, including funders, businesses, local and central government leaders and civil society, to ensure successful implementation of strategies and programmes relating to inclusive volunteering and infrastructure support.
You’ll also have a proven track record of complex programme management, as well as being a strong team leader able to ensure that colleagues’ work aligns with organisational objectives and makes a measurable impact for Londoners. With significant budget responsibility, as a member of the senior management team you will contribute to the unit’s overall development, including our anti-racism and wider equity and wellbeing initiatives.

- An awareness (if not direct experience) of civil society / third sector policy, and of the realistic experiences and challenges facing London’s communities – especially those confronting inequalities of access and opportunity.
- A track record of meaningful and effective partnership working at a senior level, with a range of different stakeholders, to support programme and policy development.
- An ability to bring problem-solving, ambition and innovation to your every day at work.
- How you balance strategic thinking with attention to detail in co-ordinating work across different programmes, with differing priorities and agendas.
- Good awareness of key relevant policy areas, as well as budgetary and governance requirements, and monitoring and evaluation processes to measure impact.
- Effective line management skills in leading, motivating and managing a team.
- Clear and convincing communication, so others see you, and our work, as credible and engage with us.
While we welcome transferable skills, senior leadership experience in any of the following areas would be a real plus: grant-giving and collaborative funding; volunteer management practice and / or inclusive volunteering practice and policy; civil society infrastructure organisations.
This position is part time post (3 days a week, 22.2 hours) as part of job share arrangement.
This role will be based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL). GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
