About the opportunity
This is a very exciting opportunity for a seasoned major gift fundraising leader with a track record of raising layered and complex six and/or seven figure gifts to join the Advancement Portfolio at the University of Sydney.

As a Director of Development, for Medicine and Health you will be part of the Portfolio’s leadership team to develop new strategies and identify and build on a number of established relationships with a strong trajectory of major and principal gifts for the faculty of Medicine and Health.

You will take a leadership role in fundraising across the faculty and schools and will use your skills and experience to close gifts of $1 million+ and attain significant personal fundraising targets. The incumbent will also develop a growing team of high performing fundraising professionals, who work collaboratively with the wider Development Office.
  
Working closely with academic leadership, this position is also charged with growing a culture of philanthropy across the faculty and schools to increase awareness of and engagement with philanthropy the University’s fundraising practice.

To be successful in this role, you will take a long-term view of relationships and gifts and have the discipline and self-motivation to execute against a plan in the short-term to see progress towards a goal.

About you

  • has extensive background in major gift fundraising, with a demonstrated ability to identify and negotiate 6 and 7 figure gift opportunities. Can demonstrate their success in closing $1 million+ gifts and meeting stretch financial targets
  • has a strong track record of achievement and meeting stretch financial targets through ambitious and complex gift proposals
  • has proven leadership experience with the ability to mentor, inspire and motivate a group of ambitious and goal-oriented professionals
  • is a true team player, working with the Major Gifts team, Donor Relations team, Prospect Research team and other areas of the Advancement Portfolio and the University of Sydney
  • has an understanding and a strong interest in medicine and health, in a tertiary environment is preferred
  • is creative, with the ability to bring together the disparate interests of a donor and match them with an opportunity that brings together disaffiliated aspects of the University
  • is detail-oriented in relationship – given the complex nature of managing a relationship with a prospect with diverse interests and competition priorities, the need to see to the details is critical
  • has demonstrated sophisticated relationship building and management skills with the ability to engage internal and external stakeholders
  • has highly developed organisational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritise own workload, to work consistently within busy schedules and to meet deadlines, whilst maintaining a focus on a longer term vision
