About the role
Reporting to the Senior Research Manager, you will support the delivery of EngineeringUK’s research into key issues for the engineering and educational sector, including into the UK’s current and future engineering skills needs; the extent to which these are being met through both academic and vocational education; and opportunities and challenges in increasing the number and diversity of young people pursuing engineering.
This will mean providing support across a range of activities and colleagues. You will therefore be an excellent team player, able to take direction but also work independently, and adept at managing multiple tasks in a deadline driven environment. A good understanding of research methods and statistics is highly desirable and a keen attention to detail essential.
- To support the development and delivery of EngineeringUK’s research programme and formulation of its policy positions
- To design and conduct quantitative and qualitative research, identifying appropriate methodological approaches to do so. This may include:
- Undertaking desk research, including literature reviews of existing reports
- Analysing primary and secondary quantitative data, including large scale education and workforce datasets
- Designing, testing, and administering surveys with young people, teachers, parents, and employers
- Developing discussion and interview guides and, where appropriate, co-facilitating focus groups and interviews with the above groups
- To summarise findings for a range of audiences and mediums, including in research reports, briefings, infographics, and presentation slides, ensuring these are accurate, methodologically sound, and fit-for-purpose
- To lead on EngineeringUK’s data outputs, analysing large-scale datasets such as the Labour Force Survey and Higher Education Student Record to create a compendium of key data tables in both Excel and interactive dashboard formats
- To manage aspects of research and data administration, including working with internal stakeholders to assess research requirements; agreeing specifications with external data providers and external research agencies; overseeing logistics for fieldwork (such as communicating times, locations, and targets to interviewers, preparing and managing information sheets and consent forms; etc); and providing progress reports
- To enforce research ethics, data storage and data management protocol, ensuring that research is conducted in line with relevant policies, codes and applicable legislation
- To respond to research and data-related queries from the engineering, education and policy sectors, as well as internal colleagues
- To keep up-to-date with developments in education and/or STEM-related policy and available data, as well as research methods
- To collaborate with the wider team to ensure we derive maximum leverage from our research and evaluation outputs

- A first degree or equivalent evidence of analytical, communication and problem-solving ability/experience
Essential experience and attributes
- Experience conducting research, preferably in social issues such education, equality, or skills
- Numerically confident, with experience analysing large-scale datasets using Excel or statistical analysis software (e.g. SPSS, STATA, R, SAS or similar)
- Excellent written skills, with experience summarising research findings for a range of audiences
- Strong time management skills, with experience working on multiple research projects at once, adapting to changing priorities and meeting hard deadlines
- Ability to work independently and prioritise own tasks and time, but also take direction, be flexible and work collaboratively with others
- A team player, contributing to team decisions and facilitating cross-organisational working
Desirable experiences and attributes
- Knowledge of STEM skills and educational policy
- A qualification and/or in work training in the application of research methods
- Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative social research, including survey design and analysis, focus groups and one-to-one interviews
- Familiarity and experience using advanced statistical methods for largescale datasets, such as inferential techniques (e.g. regression and multivariate analysis)
- Experience analysing education datasets, such as the National Pupil Database (NPD) or apprenticeship and higher education datasets
- Experience analysing workforce datasets, such as the Labour Force Survey, Employer Skills Survey, Interdepartmental Business Register (IDBR), or Working Futures
- Experience working with data visualisation software such as Tableau
- Experience using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) (e.g. Atlas.ti, NVivo or similar)
