Job Details

Pro Bono Community (PBC) is looking for a full-time Operations Manager to help us run projects aimed at improving the amount and quality of access to justice by training lawyers, law students and others and then placing them to work as volunteers at Law Centres and advice agencies.

Pro Bono Community is a registered charity that has developed specialised training programmes for students, trainees and lawyers specialising in the practical skills involved in delivering free legal advice and areas of social welfare law. In conjunction with the training, the charity coordinates volunteering placements at Law Centres and other advice agencies. The charity’s activities include a number of grant-funded projects, one of which will involve the charity setting up and running its own digital advice clinic.

The Operations Manager will report to and work alongside the Director and supervise a part-time Training & Volunteer Coordinator to undertake work supporting the charity’s activities including operations, administration, business development and strategic oversight with a particular focus on organising training programmes and co-ordinating volunteering placements.

This is a permanent, full-time role and the charity is seeking to appoint someone who can assume more responsibility over time in line with the charity’s plans for growth and expansion. The charity is seeking to appoint someone with knowledge of training and the advice sector and/or experience in a similar role.

The position will carry a salary in the range of £35-40,000 depending on the level of experience offered. Occasional weekend work may be required. The role will probably involve working from home at first but the charity is expecting to move into new offices in central London during the course of 2022. The role includes a pension contribution of up to 5% and annual leave of 25 days.

Company

Pro Bono Community (PBC) is a registered charity and social enterprise which seeks to improve access to justice by providing specialist training in legal advice and social welfare law to lawyers, trainees and students and then placing them as volunteers at Law Centres and advice agencies.

Following cuts in legal aid and government funding, Britain is experiencing a legal advice deficit in which hundreds of thousands fewer people are receiving free legal advice and assistance. Those Law Centres and advice agencies that have remained open are overstretched and under-resourced. Pro Bono Community is committed to providing these organisations with well-trained volunteers who can help them to overcome the challenges they face and improve access to justice for people in need.

By working closely with law firms and universities we hope that our training and volunteer placement schemes will serve to embed pro bono culture in the hearts and minds of young lawyers and that many of them will go on to become evangelists for volunteering and pro bono work in their future careers.

PBC was set up with support from The Legal Education Foundation and went live in 2014-15. Since then the charity has run over 90 training programmes involving more than 1800 attendees from law firms, universities and other organisations including Linklaters, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith Freehills, Simmons & Simmons, Shearman & Sterling, Olswang, Ashurst, Morgan Lewis, Farrer, Hogan Lovells, CMS, City Law School, LSE, King’s College London, University College London, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of West England, University of Hertfordshire, SOAS, Greenwich University, BPP, University of Law, Royal Holloway University and London South Bank University.

Volunteers trained by PBC have gone on to work at Law Centres and advice agencies across London. PBC expects volunteers to commit to a minimum of 13 days volunteering following their training although many will go on to extend their placements for much longer periods. Law Centres and advice agencies estimate that each volunteer assists an average of at least two people per session which means that PBC-trained volunteers have provided free legal support and assistance to an estimated 46,000 people since the charity was established
