Policy and Partnerships Manager

The Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), at the University of Essex, has a worldwide reputation as a multidisciplinary centre of quantitative social science research.

Understanding Society tracks changes in people’s lives over time across key dimensions such as education, employment, health and wellbeing, income and deprivation, family life and ‘civics’. Based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Essex, it plays a pivotal role in generating data that enables researchers and policymakers examine the changing circumstances and lives of people across the UK, and inform policy and practice.

We are looking for an individual to help build the use and impact of Understanding Society, and manage an ambitious programme of collaborative work with partner organisations. The successful candidate will relish the opportunity to champion evidence informed policy change, and develop a deep appreciation of the use of Understanding Society in (national and local) Government, NGOs, think-tanks and business. Good policy engagement, diplomatic, analytical and organisational skills learnt in government, third-sector, business or university will be essential. You will enjoy dynamic working, cultivating strong external relationships, learning new skills and working in a cross-disciplinary team environment.

The post is based in the Policy and Partnerships Unit, which aims to mobilise Understanding Society’s rich data, growing evidence base and researcher expertise to maximise the value of the Study. It has a growing reputation for effective working with government departments and third sector agencies, and is charting out new pathways to influence policy and practice. You will:

  • build productive relationships with non-academic organisations and identify strategic partners to work with
  • manage new projects and collaborative activities designed to drive up research-based policy engagement (such as our recent climate change data dive)
  • assess the effectiveness of collaborative and participative activities and instigate improvements.

The Unit team consists of an Associate Director, a Policy and Partnerships Manager (vacant), and works closely with the Impacts Manager (Communications Team), Data Analysis and Training Officer (Outreach Team), the Events Officer responsible for logistics (Communications Team) and various other internal and external players. The organisation offers flexible working.

A full list of duties and responsibilities along with the applicant requirements can be found within the attached job pack.

This post is available for two years in the first instance. Whilst it is a full-time post, part-time working will be considered.
