Press Officer
Home-based

Belonging to the Royal Voluntary Service’s community means inspiring volunteers to support the nation’s health and wellbeing. It means tackling the most pressing social issues in a workplace full of opportunities.

People within our organisation are a welcoming team of individuals from every background who support one another to be their best. They are also some of the country’s most compassionate and dedicated people who step forward to help make society better connected and more inclusive – where everyone can thrive.

Join us and help change lives, change communities and change society.

We’re currently looking for a Press Officer to join us on a full-time, permanent basis. The role will be home-based, however, the successful candidate will be required to travel to the London and/or Cardiff offices occasionally and to visit services for filming and media opportunities.

The Role

As Press Officer, you will be responsible for maximising positive awareness and engagement with the organisation, helping position us as a leading volunteering charity supporting the NHS and communities in Britain.

Developing compelling story ideas, you will pitch them to journalists and produce newsworthy press releases, case studies and features as well as working on high profile campaigns.

You will establish and maintain a breadth of media contacts and a ‘black book’ of journalists, ensuring our organisation becomes the ‘go to’ for comment in our industry. Liaising with our celebrity supporters and ambassadors is also a core part of the job role.

Additionally, you will help protect our reputation by sensitively handling reactive media enquiries, responding appropriately and escalating potential issues and incidents where necessary.

Your role will also involve:

- Assisting the planning, preparation and delivery of campaigns and events
- Supporting local teams, ensuring they are able to confidently talk to the media about the services they deliver
- Monitoring press coverage, internally sharing, logging and evaluating relevant items
- Building a collection of volunteer and client case studies and relationships
- Providing advice and support on trust and corporate funders’ campaigns

Please note, this role may require working out of hours and necessitates monitoring coverage during weekends and responding accordingly should any issues arise.

Interested? To be considered as a Press Officer, you’ll need:

- PR agency or press office experience
- Experience developing and delivering creative campaigns
- Knowledge, and an understanding, of national, regional and digital media platforms
- The ability to work on your own initiative
- Excellent communication skills
- The ability to produce high quality writing for different audiences in different styles
- To be educated to degree level

Why you should join us

As a valued employee, you will benefit from the following:

- Salary of £26,798 per annum
- An employee benefits package that gives access to an exclusive rewards website, 24-hour doctor line, financial support with dental/optical and other therapies
- A free and confidential employee assistance programme with up to six face to face sessions built in
- Opportunities to discuss flexible working
- Access to award-winning e-learning and development
- Opportunities to develop new skills and progress your career
- A great pension scheme
- Enhanced Family Leave schemes
- Six weeks’ company sick pay
- 25 days’ holiday plus paid statutory Bank Holidays

About us

Royal Voluntary Service wants to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age.

We are one of the largest volunteer organisations in the country. Our 35,000 volunteers help older people stay active, independent and able to continue to contribute to society. They do this by providing practical and emotional help where and when it’s needed.

Royal Voluntary Service helps in all sorts of ways:

  • We help older people get out of the house for a bite to eat, social occasions or just to see friends
  • We enjoy popping round for a chat as often as is liked
  • We will help with jobs such as doing the shopping and collecting library books
  • We can also do the simple but important things, such as changing a light bulb or fixing a lock
  • We are here to make sure older people are calm and well informed before they have appointments or a stay in hospital, and we’ll check they are ok when they get home
  • We also work on a national level to raise awareness of the issues older people face. We do this through our media campaigns and research, and by lobbying the government for age-related policy improvements.

Be part of an important and growing movement

As a charitable organisation we’ve got big plans for the future. Our aim is to reach two million older people in the next ten years. It’s incredibly important we achieve this as the UK’s older population is growing and needs more support.

Sharing time with older people is enjoyable, rewarding and inspiring for all of us, young and old. By volunteering now you can help today’s generation of older people live and enjoy the kind of old age they deserve.

To support our volunteers we run a full range of fundraising activities that enable them to continue their vital work.
