Care Leaver Transition Worker

Were you in care as a child? Are you looking to use your passion and first-hand experience of the problems faced by young care leavers who are in the criminal justice system to work with key external stakeholders to raise awareness and deliver change in policy and practice? Position: Care Leaver Worker – Criminal Justice System project

Location: Home based with regular visits to Manchester and North East/West

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week

Salary: £23,541 - £27,741 SCP 15-23 depending on experience

Contract: Permanent

The Role

As a Care Leaver Worker, you will be influencing and promoting policy change at national, regional and local level and also working directly with young offenders to support them.

Main responsibilities include:

 

  • Alongside the National Director, progress the criminal justice system (CJS) project
  • Lead on publicity and external communications in relation to CJS matters
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key national, regional, and local CJS policymakers and stakeholders with a view to promoting policy and practice change
  • Support care leavers in the CJS
  • Develop and support regional working groups made up of key stakeholders
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of campaigns on CJS issues
  • Attend meetings in criminal justice settings, where required
  • Undertake consultations with care leavers and host care leaver peer events
  • With support from the National Director, supervise support worker and volunteers

 

Whilst the role can be home-based, the main office base is in Manchester and the post holder would be expected to visit the office on some occasions. The focus of the regional work is Yorkshire and Humber and the North West of England. The applicant would be expected to attend meetings in these areas.

About You

As a Care Leaver Worker, you will be a creative thinker with good organisational skills and the ability work to tight deadlines. Due to the nature of the work the charity does, it is essential you have personal experience of being in care as a child.

You will have:

 

  • Experience of working in a support/service delivery setting with disadvantaged young people or adults
  • Experience of multi-agency/partnership working
  • Experience of representing an organisation or project to external stakeholders
  • An awareness of the children’s social care system in England and Wales and, in particular, the system as it relates to children in care and care leavers
  • An awareness of the criminal justice system
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
