Introduction to the department
Our Community Food Team supports people across the city to access nutritional food. We facilitate the Food Justice Network, a collective of over 200 organisations working to tackle food poverty and support local food need, we run a range of community cafes which turn good surplus food into healthy meals, and we work with individuals and organisations around a range of themes, from food growing to campaigning to reduce inequalities.
Introduction to the role
This role is to lead the organisation’s work on the Birmingham Food Justice Network (FJN). Food Justice is a movement aiming to respond to food insecurity and economic pressures within the community and to shape food policy. The Birmingham FJN was born out of work we did with partners in the first lockdown and over the last 12 months this has developed into supporting the community in a number of ways.
This role will involve coordinating the network: mapping of resources such as foodbanks; facilitating networking and information sharing through meetings and newsletters; linking network members into other things going on in the city; onboarding new members; encouraging workgroups around specific areas of activity; reporting on impact.
The role will also involve working in partnership to facilitate an on-street support forum, bringing together homeless outreach groups and statutory services to ensure the support system for vulnerable people in Birmingham is joined up and sharing best practice, supporting the Positive Pathway Approach and WMCA Designing Out Homelessness Strategy.
- Facilitate regular communication between network members
- Maintain and improve mapping resources relating to current food provision in the city
- Work with individuals across both geographic and thematic areas to identify common purpose and develop plans of action
- Ensure the Food Justice Network takes an active role on wider initiatives relating to poverty and food systems in Birmingham, ensuring any relevant opportunities are communicated to the network
- Manage a complex network of partner organisations and individuals, helping to link people together and create local opportunities for collaboration
- Represent TAWS and the Food Justice Network at meetings and local forums
- Play an active role in encouraging collaboration and communication amongst network members
- Work with BVSC and other stakeholders to develop the ‘on-street support forum’
- Work with a range of homeless outreach groups and statutory services in the city to understand barriers, local need and co-create solutions
- Ensure timely monitoring and evaluation of activities in line with reporting requirements
- Work with wider team and Volunteer Manager to recruit and support volunteers and signpost to relevant and required training.
- Work with the Assistant Director of Food and Sharing and the funding team to support the development of new opportunities
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- An understanding of existing food networks/systems and projects in Birmingham
- An understanding of how to facilitate a welcoming and empowering network
- Excellent partnership and relationship management skills, able to motivate a wide range of individuals
- The ability to solve problems and identify opportunities in challenges
- Confident taking key minutes and representing TAWS or the Food Justice Network in 1:1 and wider meetings
- Good computer skills: proficiency in software such as Zoom, MS Teams, Word, Excel and Google Maps
- Strong organisational skills, able to work autonomously
- Confident chairing and facilitating meetings
