Chair of the Board

An exciting opportunity to join Certitude as our Chair to lead our committed and diverse Board to deliver our ambitious mission.

Role: Chair of the Board

Job Type: Voluntary

Benefits: While the role is unremunerated, reasonable expenses are paid in line with Certitude’s expenses policy

Application Deadline: 8th November 2021

About the role

Certitude is at a very exciting stage of its development, having grown over the past 30 years to become a highly respected provider of a range of person-centred services for adults with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs. As London’s largest not for profit provider in its field, quality sits at the heart of our mission.

We are seeking a values-driven Chair with a passion and commitment to apply your leadership skills and knowledge to support the Board and Leadership Team to drive the organisation forward. The Chair at Certitude is a hugely rewarding role offering the opportunity to work alongside a team of highly committed, experienced and talented Board members and Leadership Team colleagues to achieve greater impact for people.

Chairing Board meetings (we have five per annum) is a significant part of the role, facilitating and leading the Board through its thinking and to its decisions. But there is much more to the role – most notably, the opportunity to meet with people we support, families, colleagues and others beyond Certitude to inform your thinking, to learn from their experiences and help us together to build solutions that improve people’s lives and opportunities.

The relationship between the Chair of the Board and the Chief Executive is a very important one in charity governance. The Chair will work closely with the Chief Executive to drive forward the strategic plan and deliver an ambitious agenda. Together, they will work closely to ensure the good performance of the organisation and will be clear about the different roles that they play.

There are five main responsibilities for our Chair:

- Strategic Leadership

- Governance

- External Relations

- Efficiency and Effectiveness

- Relationship with the Chief Executive and the wider leadership team

We will have just completed our Strategic Plan for 2022 to 2025 and our direction of travel until 2030, so we need a Chair who can lead the board and support the leadership team in making it happen. Although we have our strategy, we need a Chair who can appreciate the bigger picture, think commercially and help us to review major opportunities and risks.

Equally important to what we do is how we do it, and the Chair should lead the board in ensuring that we live our values and desired culture.

With a budgeted turnover of circa £50M, and a team in the region of 1,500 colleagues, supporting over 1,800 people, we are excited and optimistic for the future.

Experience Required

- A proven track record of successful strategic leadership

- Sophisticated understanding of governance with experience of Board development and well-developed inclusive chairing skills

- Significant experience of providing guidance and appropriate support and challenge to senior managers

- Commercial acumen, with a strong appreciation of risk management

- Significant experience of leading the execution of strategy, driving change and organisational development

- Communicating with, engaging and informing a wide range of audiences and speaking publicly about the work of an organisation

- Experience of developing, maintaining and sustaining partnerships with key stakeholders
