Job Details

The leading professional body and learned society for Physics in the UK and Ireland are seeking to appoint two Financial Advisors to help and support the work of its Council, Governance Committees and the Board of Publishing. As a trusted voice for the physics community, their purpose is to gather, inspire, guide, represent and celebrate all who share a passion for physics. They promote the health and wellbeing of the discipline and its many practical applications, reinforcing the links between education, research, industry and economic and social value. With offices in five countries, around 600 staff, a turnover of £77 million, entities in USA, China, Russia and India, they have 10 subsidiary companies, including the publishing company. This serves the global physics community by publishing more than 100 journals and around 100 e-books a year, one of the largest physics conference proceedings and several community magazines, including Physics World and the CERN Courier.

The Council has identified that there is a need to strengthen its expertise and skills by appointing two External Advisors with a finance background. Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Executive of Publishing and it's Director of Finance and Operations, both Advisors will sit on the Remuneration Committee and the Audit & Risk Committee. One of the Advisors will serve as a Board Member of the publishing company focussing on the work of the Board and its business plan. The other Advisor will provide specific support to the work of the Finance & Investment Committee.

A qualified accountant, you will bring a strong background in financial management and strategic planning, investment and foreign exchange management (in a similarly sized organisation) along with governance experience. In addition, the Advisor to the Finance and Investment Committee should have experience with Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) and ideally legacy defined benefit pension scheme experience. The Advisor that will also be a Non-Executive Director of the publishing company will bring experience of commercial strategic planning, innovation and business model change.

The appointment would initially be for a 3-year term, with the possibility of renewal and approved annually by the IOP Council.

The meetings are normally held in the London office, close to Kings Cross Station, and the Board for the publishing company meets virtually for three meetings and one and a half day in-person strategic session annually.

Diversity and skills is one of three challenges that their strategy seeks to address and it campaigns to combat barriers to inclusion and challenge stereotypes. They welcome applicants that reflect the diversity of the communities that it serves.

To find out more information about this great opportunity, please email us along with a copy of your CV. For an informal discussion, please contact our retained advisors at TPP Recruitment: Brigitte Stundner or Matt Adams on 0207 198 6060.

The closing date for applications is 9am Friday 5th November 2021.
