Executive Director
The Equality Trust
£60k • London

We are the fourth most unequal society in Europe. Inequality blights the lives of millions, and makes it incredibly hard to achieve real progress on wellbeing across the board. High levels of income inequality are linked to economic instability, financial crisis, debt and inflation. Unequal societies have less social mobility, lower scores in key educational subjects, and suffer from more violent crime. By contrast, higher equality fosters better health, lower infant mortality, greater civic participation and reported levels of happiness.

The Equality Trust passionately believes that the current situation in the UK is not an unchangeable state of affairs, and we work tirelessly to gather the evidence, make the case, advocate and persuade those who can change it. Our three strands of activity are to campaign, catalyse and co-operate. We show people the damage inequality does, and share the tools and arguments to change it.

We now seek an inspirational successor to our outgoing Executive Director, Dr Wanda Wyporska. She leaves an organisation in excellent heart, with an outstanding reputation and significantly increased profile, but with even more to do after the COVID-19 pandemic than before. So we want to appoint someone who will relish this opportunity to shape social change that lasts.

We are looking for someone who can build The Equality Trust as a tenacious, innovative and evidence-based champion supporting people and organisations to dismantle economic and structural inequalities. Candidates will see the enormous potential for growth, taking our messages to individuals, organisations and the many foundations that are increasingly focusing on this area. We have developed an unrivalled analysis of the fundamental issues, and we want our next Executive Director to work so that more and more people are motivated to advocate for change. For any campaigning charity, securing unrestricted funds to respond nimbly to tactical opportunities is crucial, and you will show a successful track record of achieving this. Extensive management experience is also essential, ideally in a campaigning and / or research organisation.
