About Talbot Village Trust

The Talbot Village Trust is a well-established charity and one of the leading benefactors in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, East Dorset and Purbeck. The Trust was established in the 1850s by the Talbot sisters who built Talbot Village to offer a complete social, economic and cultural solution to alleviate poverty, and related social and rural issues of the times, through the provision of a self-sufficient community.

Following a recent review of how the charity’s giving can make a difference to the long term future of the area in the rapidly changing world we live in, the trustees are committed to some exciting changes in giving that they are looking forward to embedding in the charity’s work.

About The Role

We are looking for a passionate, energetic, motivated and committed Head of Philanthropy who will drive forward our future grant giving strategy so that our philanthropy makes an even bigger positive difference to communities in South East Dorset.

Our team is small, and you will be joined by a newly appointed Trust Administrator and supported by a group of experienced trustees.

We are keen to find the right person for this critical role who, for us, will have the strategic mindset, vision and energy to take the trust forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the management of a portfolio of grants and contracts, being accountable for the grant lifecycle and managing relationships with new and existing grantees and learning partners.
  • Development of, and overseeing of an operational plan to support successful delivery of our emerging grant making strategy.
  • Ensure due diligence of learning partners seeking grants and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, sector best practice and internal processes.
  • Ensure that we learn from our partners and disseminate that learning appropriately with key stakeholders.
  • Ensure that relevant trust materials are produced and up to date e.g. grant making guidelines, website, annual report.
  • Maintain accurate financial records.

We are looking for somebody who:-

  • Is committed to making South East Dorset a better place, and is open minded and curious about how this can be achieved.
  • Brings a deep understanding of charities, including grant-making, and has worked within the third sector for a minimum of five years.
  • Has previous experience of working within philanthropy and grant making.
  • Demonstrates a track record of providing leadership to, and working alongside, others.
  • Is a strategic thinker who also has an eye to the details that is needed to achieve success.
  • Can demonstrate how they value people’s lived experience of social and environmental issues.
  • Will demonstrate their personal commitment to working with those who are the most marginalised, including people with disabilities, people with multiple and complex needs and people from black and brown communities.
  • Is highly organised, with strong problem solving skills and can work independently.
  • Is self-directed, action-oriented and proactive working within a small team.
  • Brings a proven ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships with partners.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills and can analyse, summarise and present information to enable Board decision-making.
