Yorkshire Cancer Research is entering an exciting period in its development. As part of this we are expanding our team at our Head Office and a number of new roles are being created. As such, we are now looking for a Finance Officer to support our Finance & Corporate Services team.

The Role

As a Finance Officer, you will support the Finance team in providing excellent quality and timely management information and statutory reporting, ensuring all financial activities are planned, implemented, monitored and reviewed and all charity projects are supported from a financial perspective, to meet both regulatory requirements and best practice in the sector.

Supporting the Finance Manager, you will play a key role in the timely and accurate accounting of restricted and unrestricted income and expenditure. Regularly reconciling bank transactions, balance sheet transactions and creditor / debtor reports. You will assist in the preparation of financial performance reports including monthly management accounts and variance analysis as well as assisting with financial planning; the implementation of systems and controls; supporting with the annual audit; and working with the team to ensure transactions are processed in a timely and accurate manner.

Specifically, you will:

  • Ensure robust Financial Performance Reporting including assisting with preparation of month end management accounts, analysing income and expenditure by fundraising appeal/campaign, Restricted fund reporting and preparation of year-end financial statements, supporting schedules and information for auditors.
  • Work closely with the Research and Relationship teams to implement and maintain financial procedures for all the charity’s activities.
  • Undertake daily monitoring of bank balances ensuring income is in line with the charity’s restricted funds agreement. Organise transfers to notice, deposit and treasury accounts. Ensure monthly cash flow statements and forecasts are completed. 
  • Ensure efficient transaction processing by working closely with Finance team who process the charity’s receipts, supplier invoices and payments in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Track, monitor and report KPI and financial performance against budget, highlighting variances to Finance Manager.
  • Support the Leadership Team in planning effectively and consistently within the charity’s overall budgeting and approvals processes, for the charity’s trading activities and any new activities.

 

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • To be AAT Level 4 and / or Part Qualified / Newly Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) or have proven experience in a similar role at a similar level.
  • Previous experience of working in a finance function including payments, banking arrangements, accounts preparation and audit and other accounting transactions, adhering to proper controls and processes.
  • Experience of liaising with external auditors and a knowledge of business operations processes, preferably in a charity environment.
  • Strong networking and interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise diplomacy and build partnerships and consensus, within teams and among other stakeholders.
  • To be able to report and present complex financial information in an accessible and people friendly way to board members and others who do not have expertise in strategic management and accounts.
  • To be highly self-motivated and able to work autonomously, take initiative and make decisions.
