Head of Advocacy and Communications
£50k • London

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is an independent charitable foundation established in Portugal in 1956. It is one of the largest European foundations, with headquarters in Lisbon and offices in London (the UK Branch) and Paris. The fundamental purpose of the Foundation is to improve the quality of life for all through art, charity, science and education. The Foundation is committed to the future, to those most vulnerable, and to the value of culture.

The UK Branch is focused on building coalitions to tackle complex global problems, and this is an exceptional opportunity for a compelling communicator to join our small team and add value to our work. In brief, you will help us to meet the Foundation’s ambitious, long-term goals by giving the causes we prioritise greater visibility, and helping engage those with the power to make a difference. We will look to you to tell a story of change that can galvanise responses from policy-makers, practitioners and other funders.

Candidates must bring a strong track record in developing and delivering strategic advocacy and communications activity, along with strengths in creativity and project delivery. We will expect you to generate quality written and other content, building a narrative that engages those we seek to influence. Working closely with the mission area leads, you will also line manage a communications officer within a culture that seeks to be non-hierarchical.

It’s a fluid and wide-ranging brief, and your ability to take the initiative, navigate ambiguity and prioritise competing demands in response to a changing external context will therefore be essential. We are looking for someone who will bring extensive experience of the full range of communications activity, bottomless enthusiasm, and a personal affiliation with the work and ethos of the Foundation.
