Looking for an opportunity to build an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in the homeless sector but have no direct experience in this line of work? If you are passionate about making a real difference by working with vulnerable people and have transferable skills, our client would love to hear from you!

Our client are a leading homelessness charity in London, providing housing and support to over 1,300 people each year. They offer support tailored to meet people’s individual needs, including housing, employment and skills training, mentoring and counselling.

This is their second programme in response to the impact of Covid-19. They understand how the pandemic has affected employment across a wide range of industries and at the same time the demand for their vital homelessness service increases, so they designed this programme to create opportunities for people to step into a new career with them.

Our client are offering roles across their supported housing services in London, located in the boroughs of Croydon, Bromley, Lambeth, and Kensington & Chelsea. Successful applicants will be placed in a service and will work with the customers who live there to help them to reach their potential and improve their quality of life. The role will build on customer care, health and safety, flexibility, adaptability and other skills to assist homeless individuals who are unable to live independently, by offering them the practical and emotional support they need to regain their independence. The attached role profile gives more specific information.

Many of the skills, values and behaviours developed in the hospitality, retail, travel, leisure and other industries can easily be transferred to the homelessness sector. The ability to think on your feet, work hard to provide someone with a quality service and create safe working environments all fit with their support worker profile. The Career Change Programme includes full training both on and off the job, starting with a comprehensive one-month training package to develop skills specific to the work they do and build on your transferable skills, values and behaviours.

Successful applicants will also have the opportunity to pass their skills on to their homeless residents through workshops or classes organised by the team. They encourage all colleagues to find creative and inspiring ways to engage with their residents and teach them new skills to help them on their journey to independence. This includes cooking, interview, dance and music workshops.

Previous Career Change trainees have had a variety of experiences and jobs: ski instructors, teachers, cabin crew and in the TV production and football industries, to name a few. This programme has been designed for people changing career, they particularly welcome those with lived experience of homelessness and they also welcome applications from recent students or those out of work who have transferable skills that they can bring to the role.

Our client are an equal opportunities employer and encourages applications from all sections of the community, including people who have experienced homelessness themselves. Equality, diversity and inclusion are key objectives for us and we reflect this in their recruitment practices, actively seeking applications from all parts of the community regardless of race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or disability.  In line with their Opportunity Promise their shortlisting process will ensure we have a diverse group of candidates from underrepresented ethnic groups invited to interview.

Please ensure that your answers give a clear outline of how your application meets the criteria for this role using the job description and person specification.

In return our client offer their colleagues:

  • a competitive salary, comprehensive training and development programme,  days annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing each year to 30 days annual leave - plus bank holidays
  • option to buy or sell annual leave up to one week’s annual leave
  • a healthcare cash plan providing cash back towards healthcare bills and other wellbeing benefits
  • occupational sick pay
  • contributory group pension scheme
  • free life assurance
