The Burma Star Memorial Fund (the Charity) is re-organising its administrative structure and is seeking someone to fill the new role of Chief Executive.
The Charity is restructuring its operations in order to focus on the Burma Star Scholarship Programme, as the benevolence role slowly reduces and, in due course, ceases. The Trustees have great ambitions for the Scholarship Programme and have invested in a new website, which requires regular updating and enhancing - www.burmastarmemorial.org
Our third Burma Star Scholar has now been selected, in conjunction with our partner, UCL.
The Chief Executive will run the Charity, reporting directly to the Trustees.
The Trustees are seeking a suitable candidate to take up the position in September, 2021.
The role will involve a flexible 2-3 day working week. Whether the role is home-based or a mixture of office and home working or is London office-based is open to discussion. There will be a minimum of one face-to-face meeting a month in London with the Trustees.
The successful applicant will be required to attend other meetings, such as services/events at The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, other charity events and meetings with supporters, potential donors and third parties. A small number of these meetings will take place outside office hours.
A family connection with, and reasonable knowledge of, the Burma Campaign will be an influential – but by no means essential – factor in candidate selection.
The successful candidate is likely to have an administrative and business/charity background with fund-raising experience. Experience of benevolence administration would also be helpful. Specific roles include:
· Fund raising
· Benevolence grants work – collating and payment
· Burma Star Grove – financial and physical oversight, coupled with occasional visits in order to meet with on-site personnel
· CAF online donations
· Supervision of contracts for lease, telephone, Trustees Indemnity Insurance, website, Sage cover – payroll and accounts
· Commemorative events – organisation and attendance: Field of Remembrance, VJ-Day and Wreath-laying ceremonies
· Donation responses – by email and letter
· Email/computer issues
· Fundraising/grant applications
· Gift Aid reclaim
· Investments – meetings with investment manager and Finance Sub-Committee; reports
· Keeping up-to-date with charity law, Charity Commission directives, HMRC directives and accounting regulations
· Maintain bank accounts/petty cash and COIF/cash book/Excel spreadsheets, bank reconciliations, receipts and payments and banking
· Organisation of Independent Examination
· Preparation of Annual Report & Financial Statements (not essential – this could be outsourced)
· Preparation of 6-monthly accounts (ditto)
· Cash flows/budgets (ditto)
· Agenda, reports and minutes for Trustees’ meetings
· Risk assessments
· Sage accounts
· Ensuring repeat benevolence cases are dealt with
· Liaising with other benevolence agencies on new cases
· Reviewing the financial circumstances of new cases or changes in circumstances of existing cases
· Preparing relevant documentation for Trustee overview and payment approval
· Confirming grants by letter to relevant agencies
· Speaking with and advising potential beneficiaries or their families or any other concerned parties by phone or email
