A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). We are looking for an outstanding individual with proven leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to build on and develop the capabilities of our team of professional staff, and to work with and support our Council and Honorary Officers.

Job Title: Executive Director
Salary: £70,000-£75,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Contract/Hours: Permanent, Full time
Location: Flexible. Weekly attendance at our offices in Southend on Sea, Essex and London, plus some homeworking and UK wide travel.

The IMA exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, for the public good.

It is the professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians, with a membership of over 5,000, comprising of mathematicians from all sectors, as well as those with an interest in mathematics.

The role

The Executive Director guides the development and implementation of the Institute’s plans and policies.  They take overall responsibility for the effective running of the organisation, managing the professional staff and the efficient financial management of the Institute, while ensuring the delivery and enhancement of services to our membership.

The successful applicant will need substantial experience of working at senior management level, ideally in a membership organisation. You will have strong business acumen, leadership and management skills, with the capacity to develop a high performing professional staff. Your outstanding interpersonal and communication skills will support your ability to build and maintain a broad network of external contacts and relationships.

As a small organisation, this Executive Director role combines setting and overseeing the strategic direction of the Institute with hands-on activities including contract negotiation, leading the professional staff to deliver IMA’s conference/s, the publication of the Institute’s journals and Mathematics Today, and as the Institute’s lead for GDPR, ensuring compliance with data protection. Playing an active role in enhancing the Institute’s impact and profile by enthusiastically representing the IMA to members and stakeholders alike, is also a key part of the role.
