Job Details

Continue the centuries of success by managing our significant financial resources and operations at a unique charity at a particularly unusual time in our national and Anglican stories. Following a decade of outstanding service from the current postholder, we are looking for a key member of the four-person Senior Leadership Team.

Founded in 1655 and with assets of over £120m, the charity provides financial grants and other forms of support to serving and retired ministers, ordinands, and clergy families. In 2020 we supported more than 1,300 individuals to the tune of over £2.6m. With a new brand and strategy in place, and a newly-appointed Chief Executive, the Trust is at a hugely exciting juncture, as it seeks to develop more and better programmes and partnerships, serving and supporting those who are, in their daily ministry, called to serve and support others.

The growth of our programmes depends significantly on the success of our operational functions, including finance, IT, HR, data protection, health & safety, and asset management, all of which will form key parts of this role. In particular, the postholder will be responsible for both the strategic and day-to-day management of our significant financial resources, for oversight of the charity’s Westminster premises and our portfolio of investments (both funds and properties), and for efficient, creative leadership of the entire support function for a historic, highly-regarded charity during an important period of development.

Please send your CV, a covering letter setting out why you are interested in the role and how you meet the person specification, and your completed criminal record declaration form, to Chief Executive Ben Cahill-Nicholls by 1pm Monday 26th July, 2021. Company

Our history and purpose

With origins dating back to 1655, Clergy Support Trust is an Anglican clergy support charity governed by a 1678 Royal Charter from King Charles II. In March 2019 we changed from our previous name, Sons & Friends of the Clergy.

The charity’s purpose is to promote, sustain and renew the wellbeing of Anglican clergy, whether serving or retired, and their dependants, so that they can flourish and be fruitful as they seek to serve God’s people and their wider communities. We also support Anglican ordinands.

Our finances

Because of its long history the charity is in a strong financial position, with investments totalling over £120 million as of 1 July 2021. In 2020, the charity gave out grants and other support totalling over £2.4 million as over 2,400 grants. The charity’s main focus at present is grant support to clergy families facing financial hardship and other difficulties, but we are starting to do more in the areas of clergy health and wellbeing.

Future strategy

These are exciting times for the charity. Clergy wellbeing is an area of increasing focus for the church, and our charity with its long-established reputation and strong financial position is uniquely placed to become a key player in supporting the welfare of clergy and their families. We launched a new four-year strategy alongside our re-brand in March 2019, and continue to look at new areas of activity, including strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations.

The charity's office

Our small staff team of eleven is based in recently refurbished offices in Westminster.
