This role is being advertised as Fundraising Manager - Challenge & Bespoke Events but on appointment your job title will be Challenge and Bespoke Events Manager.

About the team
Our Challenge and Bespoke Events team sits alongside our Culture, Entertainment and Sports and Community Fundraising teams under the umbrella of Community and Events, within a wider department – the Income Generation directorate. Welcoming, supportive and keen to meet you, we work hard but try and have a lot of fun too. What’s more, we’re very ambitious and seek to significantly grow our income and supporter numbers and are looking for someone to be part of the team that makes that happen. Put simply, this is a great opportunity to specialise in mass participation and challenge events fundraising and supporter experience while at the same time advancing your career.

About the role
Across the charity sector, fundraising through challenge events has been hugely impacted over the last year due to the effect of Covid-19. At Shelter, we’ve consolidated our events offering and are investing in growing our portfolio. This is your chance to be part of that growth.

As well as project managing and developing new and existing mass activity campaigns, we’ll look to you to ensure the delivery of excellent supporter care for event fundraisers too. Designing processes to implement supporter care effectively e.g. categorising fundraisers, creating cross-team agreements, effective use of databases, monitoring success and working within regulations will be key. What’s more, you’ll be responsible for taking a lead in transforming and renewing our supporter communications e.g. journeys on email, social media networks and other channels. Along the way, you’ll manage team assistants and regularly work with project managers to create inspiring communications plans for different groups of supporters, as well as with colleagues in Marketing and Digital Fundraising to reach new fundraisers by testing new approaches and implementing best practise in digital marketing.

About you
Your experience to date has given you a good understanding of best practice in marketing communications in order to effectively test new approaches to our challenge and bespoke fundraising supporter experience. You also have a passion for customer care and excellent project management skills that enable you to work effectively with lots of stakeholders and oversee planning, manage budgets and embrace ambitious targets. Used to line managing, motivating and developing others, you have experience of interacting with, and influencing, internal and external stakeholders and building relationships and networks while remaining sensitive to others’ needs. Above all, you’re flexible, open to change, results-driven and excited by the prospect of working in an innovative team that’s committed to improving our challenge and bespoke fundraising offerings.

In developing this strategy, it’s been vital to start with our own people: those who rely on our services, our volunteers, our employees. We aim to rebuild a movement, stronger than ever, and a movement must start with a simple idea that unites everyone within Shelter, our best advocates. Change starts here, in our work with individuals, spreading through communities, and across society.

We identify in this strategy six million households whose right to a home is either denied or under threat at this very moment. Soaring rents that squeeze out food and clothing, being thrown out of your home through no fault of your own, simply being too poor to afford a home: the terror of homelessness is everywhere.

Many are living in grossly unfit and unsafe conditions, adults and children whose lives are blighted by fear and despair. Discrimination is rampant in private renting and we have lost sight of the simple fact that we need a home just as much as we need healthcare and education. We are building the fewest social homes in 70 years, at a time when more and more people desperately need them.

In Shelter’s services, our people work tirelessly to alleviate the sheer destitution they see day in and day out. We will be a rock in the storm every day for those who need us. But our aim is bigger – to cut this suffering off at source – and we acknowledge in this strategy that we can’t do it overnight, neither can we do it alone.

For the first time, Shelter is committing in this strategy to ten-year goals as well as three-year goals so we can be confident of building to the necessary changes over the next decade. And at the same time we commit in this strategy to building the movement of people who will make this change possible.

We plan in the next three years to have 500,000 supporters join us in our mission to respond to this emergency, through campaigning, volunteering and donating. It is people that can power the change we seek.

This national emergency has been decades in the making. Now is the moment to act together with one purpose. In the community, our hubs and shops will be magnets for everyone with a role in ending the national emergency. Nationally, we will work with everyone who sees the desperate need for change: no one group or party is to blame for the emergency, and no one group or party can end it either.
