The Vacancy

After eight successful years of leadership, our current Chief Executive, is leaving to take up a new Chief Executive role in the North of England.

Our client are looking for an Interim Chief Executive to provide inspirational and supportive leadership to their staff team.

Having ultimate responsibility for the day-to-day activities associated with the Trust’s work, a key objective will be to review the scope of the CEO role and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees accordingly. With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you will promote and represent the Trust positively in relationships with key stakeholders in the community. You will also oversee the continued growth of the Trust’s fundraising activities.

With in depth experience of managing a team, working at senior management level, you will ideally have worked with a board or similar before. You should have an understanding of the opportunities, considerations and challenges of working in a key position in a small community and a great track record of building relationships with positive outcomes

With a good understanding of the current issues and challenges in the fields of conservation and the environment, it would be an advantage to have experience of working in an environmental or conservation organisation, or similar.

Who our client are

Our client champions, values and manages the islands’ landscapes for the benefit of current and future generations of islanders and visitors. Formally, their mission is:

  • To protect, restore and create sustainable, nature-rich habitats on the land and in the seas around us
  • To promote the enjoyment, appreciation, understanding and value of the Isles of Scilly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
  • To be respected in the island community and beyond as an exemplar organisation in evidence-based nature conservation
  • To support the Isles of Scilly economy by operating as a viable business, employer and by showing leadership

Although our client is the smallest of the Trusts, it is unique in its relative scale, size and influence in the community in which it is based. All of the land which the Trust manages is leased from The Duchy of Cornwall and amounts to approximately 2000 hectares, more than 50% of the total area of the islands. Included in the Trust’s regular work are the maintenance of more than 40,000 metres of footpaths and the protection of 50 Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

The staff team currently numbers eight (including the posts of Chief Executive and Head Ranger, which are shortly to become vacant), working out of the Trust’s offices at Trenoweth on St Mary’s and remotely.
