RHS Wisley, Woking to cover the South East

37.5 hours per week

Your horticulture and community outreach skills will enable us to tangibly increase our impact and profile in communities local to RHS Garden Wisley. You will be passionate about the role that plants and gardening can have in improving people’s lives, and have the creativity and determination to work as part of small team to build relationships with key local partners to deliver these benefits. With a track record delivering horticultural training, workshops and skills, you will also have an understanding of community development and consultation.

For more than 210 years the Royal Horticultural Society has been the force behind the nation’s gardening. Our charitable purpose is to inspire passion and excellence in the science, art and practice for horticulture. Our vision is to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place. As a charity, the RHS aims to inspire a wide range of audiences by demonstrating the wonders of gardening through all that we do including gardens and shows, in our publications and online, and through our work in the community.

Our Community Outreach Team is recruiting for a post based at RHS Wisley working as part of a team of three with the Senior Community Outreach Advisor and Community Outreach Manager Wisely/South East. This role is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and will help deliver and shape a program focusing on increasing the impact of the RHS to benefit local people. The post holder will work to inspire people to grow, connecting groups (including the use of digital project delivery) and helping groups to discover Wisley. Local people will be empowered through horticulture skills and celebrating achievements together. Working with a broad network of education providers, community groups and partners, the role will facilitate access to Wisley and participation in RHS community growing, Wisley events and education programmes. To achieve maximum impact, the role will help us build strong relationships with external partners and internal teams across the RHS as well as assisting with budget monitoring and project reporting to help highlight our positive impact.

If you are a passionate about community engagement through growing, a skilled horticulturalist with experience inspiring audiences new to gardening and the next generation of gardeners, then this is the role for you.

With excellent communication and reflective skills and the ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with stakeholder organisations you should have experience of training and a qualification in horticulture (to a minimum of Level 2).

Experience of working with community organisations, volunteers, young people, children, families and schools is preferred, including children and adults at risk. The RHS is committed to ensuring that everyone, individuals and organisations, who are involved with the Society, are clear about their roles and responsibilities. The Society will actively promote the welfare of all children, young people and adults at risk by working to the best possible safeguarding standards across all its services, activities and venues.

The RHS provides a number of great benefits for employees including:

  • Free access to all RHS Gardens, Shows and Libraries
  • Employee discounts including airport parking, hotels, retail and gym membership
  • 25 days holiday (increasing 28 and 30 with service) and option to buy/sell
  • Monthly Garden Magazine and access to Horticultural advice
  • Sponsorship for External Studies

It’s never been more exciting time to join the Royal Horticultural Society. We are making a landmark £160 million investment in the future of horticulture over the next 10 years. This will allow us to bring the joy of gardening to millions more people and make some of the most significant and exciting changes in the history. Join us and be part of the history.

Apply via our website by 22 June 2021.  First interviews will be held online on Tuesday 6 and Thursday 8 July 2021.
