Finance Director
c. £80 - £85k + benefits
Flexible location

For over 70 years, Leonard Cheshire has led the way in establishing effective ways of supporting disabled people. Today, we are the leader in enriching the lives of disabled people in the UK and around the world. Together with partners, we open doors to opportunity and break down barriers that deny disabled people their basic rights. With 5,000 staff and 4,000 volunteers, last year we reached over 435,000 people and organisations. We directly supported over 71,800 disabled people in the UK and around the world, directly reached another 27,000 people and organisations, indirectly reached over 115,000 people, and built awareness and support with over 221,000 people and organisations.

We promote independent living by providing support to 2,500 people in a variety of 129 UK living services including supported living, nursing and day centre facilities. We also support 9,000 disabled people living elsewhere in the UK with skills, confidence and employment programmes. Internationally, we are a specialist development NGO delivering inclusive education, youth leadership and ‘access to livelihoods’ programmes to more than 60,000 people across Asia and Africa. We work with organisations and the public to adopt inclusive behaviours and practices; and we influence local, national and global governments to change laws and policies which positively affect the lives of disabled people.

Our new Finance Director will join us at an extremely exciting point in our journey. We are making excellent progress with a programme of transformation which will ensure that we are in the best possible shape to address the issues of the future. This includes a new management information system, improved financial processes and controls, and clear expectations about how we deliver expert professional support to business partners and stakeholders. Reporting directly to the CFO (and on occasion deputising), you’ll also support the delivery of our long-term business plans and will provide high-level financial intelligence and advice to colleagues across the organisation.

Your career to date is likely to include a track record of success in a comparable role, probably in a charity, and you will have gained an astute insight into how high-performing financial operations can support and accelerate organisational transformation. You’ll bring extensive experience of leading this function, including team management, internal and external reporting, forecasting and budget-setting. Relationships and communication will be at the heart of your success, and you should be able to demonstrate a sophisticated approach to management and leadership, as well as an appropriately commercial mindset and a commitment to outstanding customer service.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace for our employees, regardless of their race, sexual orientation, religion, age, gender, disability status or any other dimension of diversity. We believe that we each have a personal accountability for success in this area, and we encourage everyone to contribute to an inclusive workplace culture. We actively encourage applications from the widest possible range of backgrounds and experiences.

Company

Leonard Cheshire Disability is a charity that supports disabled people in the UK and internationally. It is a major social care provider and runs numerous employment, volunteering and digital inclusion projects as well as campaigning for equality for disabled people.

Founded in 1948, Leonard Cheshire Disability has an annual income of £162m and is one of the largest employers in the voluntary sector, with 7,500 members of staff.

Leonard Cheshire Disability takes its name from its founder, former RAF pilot Leonard Cheshire. It started by establishing care homes. By the 1960s, the charity ran over fifty services in the UK and 22 other countries and, in the next decade, began to diversify into community projects and home support.

Leonard Cheshire Disability now works directly with more than 20,000 people in the UK and reaches tens of thousands more through its policy and campaign work. It has offices in London, Edinburgh, Caerleon (Wales) and Belfast.

Social care provision is still a major part of the charity’s work. It operates over 100 care homes across the UK. Residents include people with physical and sensory impairments, people with learning disabilities, children, older people and people with an acquired brain injury.

Leonard Cheshire is one of the UK’s leading providers of specialist rehabilitation for people with brain injuries, currently supporting over 500 people through its network of rehabilitation and long stay centres.

The charity also provides supported living accommodation services, personalised care in people’s own homes, day support, community outreach services and respite support.

Work and skills development is another major strand of the charity’s mission. It provides training to improve skills and support disabled people into employment. Services include providing volunteering opportunities for 16-35 year olds, arranging paid internships at top UK companies and a voluntary, government-supported programme to help disabled people looking to find or keep a job.

Leonard Cheshire also supports digital inclusion for disabled people. It operates a network of accessible IT rooms, giving access to computers and equipment, and offers access to computers and adapted equipment in disabled people’s own homes.

Leonard Cheshire Disability is also an international organisation, with regional offices in South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, West Africa, East and North Africa and Southern Africa. It is working to a five year international strategy which aims to promote independence among more than 100,000 people with disabilities in Africa and Asia.

As one of the leading providers of services for people with disabilities in the UK, Leonard Cheshire Disability offers a variety of working environments, such as care homes, day centres and offices.
