The Head of Guidance and Practice sits within the Policy function of the Communications and Policy Directorate, set up to develop an ambitious new approach to policy making at the Charity Commission.

This person will shape our developing approach trustee guidance, building user insights and impact measurement into their approach. They will work with Strategic Communications to find new and better ways to reach the 700,000 strong community of charity trustees, influencing their behaviour through tailored and targeted engagement and campaigns to increase their engagement with our guidance.

Responsibilities

This role is directly accountable for:

- leading projects to create, update or improve guidance or tools, building on user research to understand the need and success of that guidance and building on an understanding of our strategy and organisational aims

- increasing the reach and impact of our guidance, in collaboration with colleagues in Communications

- tracking and measuring the reach, awareness, engagement and impact of guidance using the most up to date and robust methods

- overseeing the online hub for guidance and tools ensuring that trustees and other users can find relevant key information and tools easily

- engaging with the charity sector in the production, testing and evaluation of our guidance

- successful planning and project management of the team’s work

- understanding the risk drivers, operational priorities and external drivers for new or updated regulatory guidance or new content or tools

- supporting wider Commission projects which engage trustees

- delivering policy projects in support of the directorate’s wider programme of work

- representing the Commission at events, for example seminars and workshops, and explaining our guidance to charities and stakeholders

- proactively managing a team of six staff, giving them support and direction, setting clear expectations, and developing their performance

As a member of the directorate’s senior leadership team, the Head of Guidance and Practice will share collective responsibility for:

- leading and shaping the directorate’s activity, driving and monitoring performance

- helping to make the directorate a great place to work

- working with key internal stakeholders - including the Board, executive leadership team, and colleagues in other directorates - to ensure the directorate understands and is supporting and contributing to strategic and business priorities

The successful applicant is likely to have experience in policy, a legal background or deep knowledge of the charity sector
