The Charity Commission regulates 170,000 charities across England and Wales ensuring that they work within a legal framework thus building public confidence that the £10bn generously donated is put to good use.

The Strategic Policy Advisor sits within the Policy function, recently set up to develop an ambitious new approach to policy making at the Charity Commission.

This person will use insights and research to shape the development of regulatory policy as part of an exciting programme of proactive policy work. They will also work with Strategic Communications to implement and embed policy by finding new and better ways to reach out to the 700,000 strong community of charity trustees, influencing their behaviour through tailored and targeted engagement and campaigns.

Responsibilities

The Strategic Policy Adviser is a senior role within our committed and enquiring policy team and so will lead on a wide variety of strategic policy development work.

- taking ownership of complex policy issues, using data and insights to create innovative solutions

- modelling policymaking best practice from scoping and exploration, development to evaluation, via, testing, and delivery

- horizon scanning - the charitable sector and wider society – and then synthesising analysis, evidence and strategic thinking, into a clear assessment of the position, trends, risks and opportunities for charity

- working with international and UK charity regulators and other UK regulators to codify and share best practice around regulatory policy making

- collaborating with colleagues in the Charity Commission and other government departments

- writing succinct, focused and impactful formal papers and policy briefings

- helping to make policy a great place to work

Applicants must have experience of working in policy. At least one role will have a research element, so we welcome applications from candidates with the ability to design research programmes and interpret and use data. Likewise, we welcome applications from candidates with a knowledge of nudge theory, the charity sector and writing engaging reports. However, these are not vital and applications from candidates with great policy experience in other fields would also be valued.
