ActionAid are recruiting for an Advocacy Advisor to support the organisational influencing efforts and to sustain strong parliamentary and government relationships to advance our advocacy to make change happen for women and girls in international development and humanitarian policy and practice.
ActionAid is an international charity that works with women and girls living in poverty. Our dedicated local staff are ending violence against women and girls and helping change lives, for good. We won’t stop until women and girls are out of danger, out of poverty and on track to create the future they want.
As Advocacy Advisor, you will support the development and implementation of advocacy strategies and identify key influencing targets for ActionAid’s policy, advocacy and campaigning work.
A key focus of your work will be to support in the building of ActionAid’s credibility, influence and relationships with UK Parliamentarians in support of advocacy strategies on our priority issues. You will ensure that these priority issues have a strong profile in UK Parliament and Government.
In order to succeed within this role, you should be able to demonstrate experience of successfully influencing stakeholders in UK Government or Parliament.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of UK parliamentary process, and realistic opportunities for influencing within it (as well as a recognition of the challenges of UK advocacy in this current political context).
The Advocacy Advisor should also show a broad understanding of the UK political context in relation to international development and women's rights, and an understanding of AAUK's feminist principles.
We are keen to receive applications from those with experience of working collaboratively across teams (who may have varied objectives) in order to identify a shared purpose.
If you meet this criteria and also have experience of advising senior colleagues on key political issues and an ability to condense complex information into succinct briefings and analysis, we are keen to receive your application.
Please note that this role will be offered as a 12 month fixed term contract.

Improving access to education is another facet of its mission. 59 million children, more than half of them girls, were out of school in 2013. ActionAid works with more than 5,000 schools across Africa, Asia and Latin America to help over a millions girls and boys get the free, quality education they are entitled to.
Women’s rights and gender equality informs all of ActionAid’s activities. The charity works with communities against female genital mutilation, gender-based violence and forced early marriage.
ActionAid also campaigns for tax justice, fairer wages and more effective aid which can tackle the roots causes of poverty. It estimates that poorer countries lose around $200 billion a year from tax dodging by companies.
A variety of different roles are available at ActionAid including policy adviser, fundraising offer and HR manager. Employee benefits are plentiful, encompassing the opportunity to develop new skills, a pension scheme, childcare vouchers and free advice services.
ActionAid also supports selected UK employees to travel to host countries in order to gain first-hand experience of its in-country work. Frequent secondments, whereby employees work, for a period, in another department or different country in the federation, take place. The charity encourages job shares.
