Job Title: Management Accountant (The Message Enterprise Centre)
Location: HQ, Lancaster House, Sharston, Manchester.(Flexible working possible)
Hours: Full Time, 35 hours pw
Contract: Fixed Term – 12-15 months maternity cover
Salary: £25-£28k (dependent upon experience)
Start date: March 2021

Responsible to: Head of Finance
Primary internal working relationships: Finance Team, MEC Business Managers,
Central Admin Team.
Primary external working relationships: MEC Customers & Suppliers, Payroll Contractor,
Banking provider, Auditors.
Main purpose of the job
To provide effective financial management, monitoring, and reporting for The Message Enterprise
Centre (MEC), subsidiary of The Message Trust (TMT), to ensure the objectives of the Charity are
supported.
Job summary:
The post holder will work closely to support the Head of Finance in providing effective financial
management of the Charity, covering the following areas:
– Monthly management accounts ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
– Maintain and develop sound financial management and control systems.
– Maintain all accounting ledgers and Accounts Payable & Receivable functions.
– Provide support to other departments as required, for example financial information to support
funding applications and reports to donors.
– Enter fully into The Message Trust team life, including morning prayers, monthly prayer days and
evening prayer meetings.
Main duties and responsibilities
Treasury Management
– To maintain The MEC’s bank accounts, mandates and group pooling arrangements, including
reconciliation with the accounting system and liaison with the bank.
– To assist in the design and implementation of cash flow forecasting models to ensure the
best use of cash resources.
– To maintain adequate records to ensure that regular monitoring takes place of all accounts

Management Accounts
– The processing of monthly financial procedures following the Management Accounts
checklist to ensure that all tasks are completed to given deadlines.
– To calculate and post journal entries, for example depreciation, accruals & prepayments.
– To maintain the Control accounts reconciliations and general month end duties
– Monthly Management reports and accounts (including balance sheet and profit & loss)
– Statistics, figures and other financial information for management
– Provide detailed analysis of cost centre costs and income and explain variances between
actual and budget figures of each cost centre.
– Budgeting and cashflow forecasting.
Monitoring and Performance
– To assist in the review of accounting policies to ensure that they reflect best practice and
comply with Charities SORP (FRS 102).
– To review accounting systems and issue financial procedures to ensure the financial business
is transacted in a secure and efficient manner.
– To assist in the production of timely financial and statistical reports.
– To assist in the co-ordination of the budget process and production of monthly and annual
budgets and forecasts for each constituent part of the organisation.
– To assist in the production of Annual accounts and to maintain records appropriate to the
requirements of the external auditors.
Financial Management and Control
– To help ensure systems are established and maintained in order to provide appropriate levels
of security and controls over resources and assets.
– To operate the Natwest applications regarding electronic enquiry and payments system, and
oversee all direct debit/standing order accounting procedures.
– To assist in the development and maintenance of a computerised fixed asset module.
– To assist in the planning and management of the charity’s tax liabilities under existing and
proposed legislation.
– To assist in the production of VAT returns and the development of improved VAT accounting
procedures with a view to enhanced input tax recovery.
– To provide technical support to project staff in formulating and implementing project
accounting systems, including grant accounting.
– To ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with the requirements of the
Companies and Charities Acts.
Financial Systems and IT
– To oversee manual and computerised financial systems, to ensure that they are maintained,
up to date and accurate for MEC.
– To support the HR function in the provision of appropriate training for staff in financial
computer systems and programs.
– To develop and design relevant reports using Sage 200.
– Payroll
– Liaise with external payroll provider for weekly and monthly salaries.
– Process employee payments both manually and electronically.
– To follow month and year end procedures and reports using the Payroll checklist.
Communication
– To communicate clearly (in writing and verbally) at all times and especially in the
explanation of complex financial information to a wide range of audiences within MEC/TMT.
General
– Provide support to Head of Finance on all other ad-hoc accounting matters arising in the
running of the Charity.
– Support the Message Group Finance Team in additional duties within the scope of the
Finance Team.

Qualifications
Essential:
Part qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA,
CIPFA or equivalent body).
Desirable:
Fully Qualified Accountant from relevant body.

Notes
All Message staff are set a personal fundraising target. We ask that the successful applicant
has a minimum of £75 per month of regular financial support before commencing employment,
increasing to £125 per month by the end of the three-month probation period and aims to add
one supporter a month after that. Training and support will be given to help you achieve this.
Staff are also expected to organise and take part in, at least one fundraising or other sponsored
event annually.
