Clinical Science Trustee
(Remote with occasional in-person meetings)

Do you have a background as a clinician in human or animal medicine? Want to help advance science to improve treatments for people without the use of animals?

If so, this is a unique opportunity to make a positive, lasting difference with the country’s leading charity for animal free medical research.

About us

Animal Free Research UK is the leading charity working for a world where human diseases are cured faster without animal suffering. By pioneering excellence, inspiring and supporting scientists and influencing change, we will end the use of animals and improve medical research.

By 2040, we aim to transform medical research and regulation so that the development of treatments for human diseases can be entirely animal free and breakthroughs achieved faster.

We fund a portfolio of excellent high impact scientific research projects within the UK that focuses on replacing the use of animals in medical research. We also work to overcome the barriers to animal free research, influence robust legislation and support scientists to develop human relevant research careers. Our pioneering work is funded by donations and legacies.

The role

Our Board of Trustees plays a key role in setting our overall strategic direction and providing scrutiny to our processes and decisions, as well as ensuring standards of governance are upheld.

As Clinical Science Trustee, you will help to strengthen our governance and drive forward the charity’s vision, mission and values. You’ll play a key role in helping to advance science to improve treatments for humans without the use of animals. In addition, you will have the chance to help shape our grant making strategy and approve research projects for funding with fellow Trustees, exposing you to multiple disciplines which will be both intellectually stimulating and rewarding.

Our current Clinical Science Trustee is still in post, so you will benefit from a comprehensive handover, offering you the perfect opportunity to develop your knowledge and relationship with the Trustees and senior management team whilst ensuring you feel fully confident in the role.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a clinical and/or medical degree (or equivalent)
  • Has a comprehensive understanding of clinical practice
  • Has relevant knowledge of human and/or animal medical science
  • Shares our charity’s vision, mission and values

Why become a Clinical Science Trustee?

Trusteeship is a unique form of volunteering and brings its own distinct challenges and rewards. This role offers a great opportunity to gain invaluable governance experience and support the realisation of ground-breaking research.

You will have the chance to help shape our grant making strategy and approve research projects for funding with fellow Trustees, which will make a real impact on replacing animals and advancing medical research.

If you are concerned about the continued use of animals in medical research, as well as the poor translation to understanding human diseases and producing clinical treatments, join us. Help make a life-saving difference to people and animals.
