Director of People and Transformation
c. £80k • London-based

At Refuge, we believe that no-one should have to live in fear of violence and abuse, and we help empower survivors and children to rebuild their lives, free from violence and fear. We provide high-quality services for those who have experienced violence; protect survivors by advocating for a strong criminal justice response to perpetrators; and prevent future violence through education, training and awareness-raising.  Our dedication and uncompromising focus on the interests and voices of survivors mean that we are among the most influential voices in influencing decision makers and policy-making, and we believe the Domestic Abuse Bill 2020 offers the prospect of a genuine step change.

Refuge employs over 350 staff (supported by around 100 dedicated volunteers) across a diverse range of roles, and our objective is that Refuge is a great place to work and volunteer. In this role, you’ll be accountable for the development and delivery of effective people strategies and plans which will help us to keep improving on our vital work. You’ll oversee our approach to the full range of people activity – recognition and pay, engagement and culture, leadership and management development, OD and internal communication, EDI and change – and will lead a small team of HR professionals to ensure we’ve the right people, processes and resources in place across the board. As a member of the Senior Leadership team and our principal expert adviser on people issues, you’ll also work closely with the CEO and SLT on people and workforce matters, reporting to the board and subcommittees where needed.

An experienced senior HR professional, you’ll have a track record of successfully designing and leading the people strategy in at least one complex organisation, and an understanding of significant change is essential. Skilled at problem solving, and able to influence at all levels and drive transformation, you’ll have a particular insight into the range of demands made on our staff; moreover, you‘ll bring a comprehensive understanding of the management approaches, support and professional development that will enable them to work effectively and resiliently under what can be highly pressured conditions. An understanding of how we can responsively and effectively support a geographically dispersed workforce would be an advantage.

As the lead on HR governance, you will need to understand how this works (preferably within the not for profit and charitable sectors) so that you can advise the CEO, senior leadership and Trustees accordingly. Working in an environment where safeguarding is a key factor, you should have a good understanding of people risk management. Finally, you’ll play an important role in fostering and supporting a meaningful workforce conversation, so you should have a grasp of the key principles of good internal communications and bring experience of promoting and amplifying the employee voice.

We believe that greater diversity in our senior management team would increase our effectiveness. So, if you do not fulfil all the criteria in the Person Specification but can bring other relevant experience and knowledge from outside your professional life please do put in an application.
