Voluntary Role

We are working in partnership with Dorset Museum which is owned and managed by the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society. This was one of Dorset’s first conservation organisation established to collect, preserve, research and exhibit objects relating to the archaeology, natural history, art, literature, and culture of Dorset.

Led by the Executive Director, Commercial Director and Director of Collections and Public Engagement, a full complement of paid staff and a team of almost 200 volunteers support the Objects of the Society.

The Museum is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound redevelopment to establish Tomorrow’s Museum for Dorset. Tomorrow’s Museum for Dorset will become a cultural destination at the heart of Dorset’s community and transform the Museum into a leading, contemporary cultural and heritage centre which will include new galleries, a learning centre, collections storage, a library and visitor facilities.

During this exciting phase, the charity is looking to appoint five Trustees to join the Board. The Board of Trustees has ultimate responsibility for the running of the Museum and deals with all major policy decisions, strategic matters, approval of the business plan, annual budget and accounts, and other related matters to the governance of the organisation.

The successful candidates will need to demonstrate knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Financial management/accountancy – retail finance in particular
  • Income generation (visitor attraction / tourism)
  • Community engagement
  • IT/digital
  • Volunteering and safeguarding
  • Life-long learning and education
  • Museum and curatorial skills (including recent legislation & broader issues)
  • People management
  • Local knowledge
  • Business or commercial knowledge
  • Legal knowledge (including charity and company law) Fundraising
  • Skills in the Cultural Domain (including Libraries and Archives)
  • Local Government
  • Ambassadorial

Trustees should be prepared to commit themselves to the work of the Board for up to eight days per annum. The term of the appointment will be for three years, renewable for a second term. Board members will serve on a voluntary basis, though reasonable expenses will be paid.
