Job Details

The leading professional body and learned society for Physics in the UK and Ireland, the Institute of Physics (IOP), are recruiting for a Director of Science, Innovation and Skills to work along side the CEO to provide strategic leadership that adds value to UK and Irish Physics. As a trusted voice for the physics community, The IOP work with partners to develop the teaching of physics in schools, encourage innovation in business and provide evidence-based advice to support UK and Irish governments. Their members include those in industry, academia, the classroom or training programmes.

As the Director of Science, Innovation and Skills you will play a key role in the Executive Team and the wider organisation with the ultimate goal of inspiring people to develop their knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of Physics. In collaboration with the Executive Team, you will promote innovation and disruptive thinking in the way the physics programmes are delivered, building high performing programme delivery teams while promoting diversity and inclusiveness. This is also an important outward facing role for the IOP, where you will manage key stakeholder relationships and form strong partnerships across the Physics Community.

The Director of Science, Innovation and Skills will provide an executive lead on the design and delivery of the IOP’s programmes of work. You will support the Executive Team in delivering an impactful policy programme, the development of membership and will provide an executive lead on managing the IOP's business cycle including programme impact measurement.

As the Director of Science, Innovation and Skills, you will bring demonstrable experience in a leadership position within the science community to drive the delivery of innovative programmes. Ideally, you will have experience at a senior leadership level in a relevant organisation, such as Higher Education, Research Funding or Research Councils, preferably with demonstrable technical expertise in one of the Physical Sciences. You will be a strong people manager with solid negotiating, relationship-building and influencing skills.
