Data Analyst & Synthesiser Consultant – 2 Month Contract
Home Based
£26,000 pro rata

About Us

INASP is an international development organisation working with a global network of partners to improve access, production and use of research information and knowledge in developing countries.

Since our inception, we’ve designed and delivered hundreds of effective capacity building interventions and programmes to make knowledge systems more equitable in 25 countries. We work across the research to knowledge system with a focus on the areas of research capacity, evidence for policy and practice and higher education and learning.

The Work

INASP has successfully amassed significant data in a variety of thematic areas in which it works.

While some of this data has been analysed and incorporated into programme development, there remain significant sets of data which we are yet to interrogate and fully understand and document their significance.

We’re looking for three Data Analyst & Synthesiser Consultants to join us on a two month contract and accomplish this.

The Purpose

We wish to produce a set of discussion papers to report on the impact of our work, and on other significant and “deeper learning” from our work. As a Data Analyst & Synthesiser Consultant, your work will contribute to the writing of these reports.

This project will draw primarily on INASP’s existing databases as well as undertake a significant literature review/update an existing one to locate our work and these findings within the broader scholarship. The comprehensive synthesis of the evidence we have gathered to date will help inform the development of INASP’s work going forward.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning, you will join one of the following projects:

Undertake meta-analysis of INASP's research capacity development data
This project will focus on research capacity primarily to deepen our understanding of the effectiveness of new and evolving technology-enhanced capacity development approaches currently in use at INASP. We will look at the effectiveness of digital and technology-enhanced approaches in our research capacity work, and the impact of INASP’s digital learning platforms and communities, to support researchers and other knowledge actors in the South broadly, and specifically as a collaborative tool to enable and support peer learning.

Undertake meta-analyses of INASP's data on Higher Education
This project will focus on undergraduate teaching and learning in Higher Education in East Africa primarily to deepen our understanding of what factors within East African universities (focusing on 4 specific institutions) influence the extent to which they are able to introduce and embed critical thinking, problem-solving, gender-responsive, and broadly, more analytical approaches to teaching and learning. From this, we aim to derive key lessons that will enable us to strengthen and expand our work, both with our existing partner universities and more broadly within and outside Africa.

Undertake meta-analyses of INASP's data on capacity for evidence use in the public sector
This project will focus on how to build capacity for evidence use in the public sector. The project offers an opportunity to assist INASP systematise our learning across multiple projects in this area over the past decade; and to understand our contributions to the wider sector.

Skills and Qualifications

You will have strong research (both quantitative and qualitative) skills and a proactive approach to understanding INASP’s work, including asking questions to fill in knowledge/data gaps. It is essential therefore that you are able to work effectively independently with regular consultation.

We are looking for highly motivated researchers, equipped with a PhD or equivalent experience in any of the social science or humanities fields. You will have:

Essential

  • A PhD, or near to completion of a PhD or a research-based master’s degree with significant research experience
  • Quantitative research skills including excellent knowledge of relevant statistic techniques
  • Qualitative research skills including excellent knowledge of some of its methods and their application
  • Excellent writing abilities, ideally demonstrated by publications in either peer reviewed journals and/or published working papers by recognised organisations
  • A love of data and its exploration and interrogation to uncover non-obvious and hidden learning or findings where they exist
  • The ability to write and refine reports, journal articles, and/or discussion papers

Other organisations may call this role Analyst, Data Analysis Consultant, Researcher, or Research Consultant.

Company

We are an international development organization with nearly 30 years’ experience of working with a global network of partners in Africa, Latin America and Asia.

We believe that contributing to stronger and more equitable ecosystems will enable and empower knowledge producers and users to address the key development challenges and improve lives.

To realize this potential, we work in partnership to strengthen the capacity of individuals and institutions to produce, share and use research and knowledge, in support of national development.

To fight hunger, climate change, disease, inequality and other global challenges, research and evidence is  vital. Knowledge and evidence enable solutions that address global challenges and transform lives.

But we see voices that are not heard, talent that is wasted and research which is not used. Inequities within and between research and knowledge systems prevent the full potential of talent from being brought to bear on local and global challenges.

Researchers and decision makers in developing countries encounter fundamental barriers to producing, communicating and using research and evidence.

To realise our vision to put research and knowledge at the heart of development, we need to see a system in which these missing voices are heard. With our partners, INASP is working towards a research and knowledge system that includes every voice and fosters every talent.
