South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service is looking for team focused and practically minded individuals with a good level of physical fitness to join our Contingency Fire Crew (CFC) in the role of Contingency Fire Operative. The Contingency Fire Crew exists to provide support in the event of exceptional excess demands on the service or in the event of local or national industrial action. Those selected will be trained in basic firefighting and emergency response techniques and will be called on (post initial training) to provide cover as and when required. This is a zero hours contract following initial training. (Please note this is a separate role to that of a full time Firefighter).

Contingency Fire & Emergency Operative Role

Pay: £13.40 per hour during any period of training or work undertaken.
(Approximately £1407 for the 3 week Initial Training Course)

£200 retention payment for every 4-week period of availability post Initial Training. Please be aware that to receive the retention payment you would need to  attend at least 4 out of 8 weekend scheduled top up training courses/days within a calendar year.

Contract Type: Following your initial training you will be contracted to work only as and when required but would receive the £200 payment per four week period

Considering the demanding nature of emergency and fire response work you must be medically fit for the role and must have a good level of physical fitness. A fitness test, practical assessment and full medical assessment including substance misuse testing will formpart of our selection process.

Our selection and training timetable is outlined below:

Selection Process – Date of Selection Test:

Initial Assessment Day (You will just need to attend one of the dates below):

  • Saturday 7th November 2020
  • Sunday 8th November 2020
  • Saturday 14th November 2020
  • Sunday 15th November 2020

Practical Assessment Day: 19th or 20th November 2020
Medical Appointments: 8th – 11th January 2021
Kit Fitting: 25th & 26th January 2021
3 Week Training Course: 1st – 19th February 2021 (Excluding weekends)

NOTE: You will need to be available for initial training between 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. If you are interested in applying you must be available on the dates outlined above. You will also need to be able to provide reasonable availability to cover potential periods of exceptional excess service demand or industrial action.

You must be 18 or over and eligible to work in the UK. All recruitment is subject to successful completion of all assessments, medical screening, substance misuse testing and a Disclosure Scotland Basic Check of unspent criminal convictions.
