Legal Trustee
Central London (home/office based, with initial remote working)

If you are passionate about animal protection and have a legal background, this is an exciting opportunity to join an award-winning organisation that’s making a life-saving difference to people and animals.

About us

Animal Free Research UK is the leading charity working towards a world where human diseases are cured faster without animal suffering. By pioneering excellence, inspiring and supporting scientists and influencing change, we will end the use of animals and improve medical research.

By 2040, we aim to transform medical research and regulation in the UK so that the development of treatments for human diseases can be entirely animal free and breakthroughs can be achieved faster.

We fund an extensive portfolio of excellent high impact scientific research projects within the UK that focus on replacing the use of animals used in medical research. Income to fund our research is generated almost exclusively by donations and legacies.

The role

The Board of Trustees plays a key role in setting the overall strategic direction and providing scrutiny to our processes and decisions as well as ensuring standards of governance are upheld.

As Legal Trustee, you will help drive forward the charity’s vision, mission and values, and ensure compliance and accountability for legal, governance and regulatory obligations.

Our current legal trustee will support your induction with a six to nine month handover before stepping down, to ensure you feel fully confident in the role.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who:

  • is deeply passionate about our charity’s mission and values
  • is able to bring legal expertise and experience (e.g. in commercial, employment or charity law)
  • is values driven, able to make sound decisions and take risks, whilst being compassionate and empowering.

Ultimately, we want to hear from dedicated, skilled legal professionals who want to make a difference for animals and people, and who are passionate about committing their time and energy to helping our small but ambitious charity to thrive.

We want to make our team a diverse and inclusive one with plenty of passion.

Why become a Trustee?

Trusteeship is a unique form of volunteering and brings its own distinct challenges and rewards. You will play an integral part in the good governance of our charity, ensuring that we adhere closely to our mission and continue to work in the interests of our beneficiaries, both people and animals alike.

You will have the opportunity to develop and hone your critical thinking, problem-solving and team-working skills. Trusteeship can have an immediate and powerful impact upon your career, opening doors to new responsibilities and more senior job prospects.

Here at Animal Free Research UK, you will contribute to the development of better treatments for debilitating diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease using the latest human-relevant, animal free techniques and work towards ending the use of animals in laboratories for good.

In return, you will be fully supported in developing your professional trustee career, working as part of a highly skilled team of trustees.
