Chief Executive

c. £80k

my AFK (formerly Action For Kids) is a national charity supporting disabled children, young people and their families. For nearly three decades, we have helped to prepare young people with learning disabilities and autism for life after school through our accredited education, training and work experience programmes.

Over the last five years we have had increasing success getting our “alumni” into permanent part time employment, whilst providing the necessary ongoing support to make those roles sustainable for the long term. Our young people are able to work across a broad range of sectors, and we have built strong relationship with over 40 eager employers so far. We also provide bespoke mobility equipment that’s not available on the NHS to disabled children and young people, run a programme of holidays and short breaks, and undertake advocacy and campaigning to change the conversation about how disabled young people can be supported to develop their mobility, personal and independent living skills.

This portfolio wraps seamlessly around the young people we help, providing them with the practical, effective and enduring support they need to transform their futures. Our focus is on a young person’s potential and aspirations, not the apparent barriers they face. We’re incredibly proud of all those who have come through my AFK’s doors and gone on to live full and fulfilling lives. But we want to do so much more, and our new Chief Executive will be at the heart of planning, resourcing and leading our organisation so it can achieve exactly that.

At the heart of this post will be the task of building on our current solid foundations, to extend our reach and help us to help more young people. This will include the core responsibilities of any charity leader – strategy, operational leadership, budgeting, compliance and safeguarding – together with some exciting and unique ambitions of our own. Amongst the latter, we include the expansion of our profile to a national level, and developing our approach to personalised budgets; we are also in the early stages of devising a strategy to enable our experience and insight to reach many more disabled students through their educational settings.

Candidates are likely to bring  track record of success in charity or NFP leadership, and a sophisticated grasp of the funding ecology for young people with disabilities would be a distinct advantage. Strong fundraising skills are essential, and we will look for evidence of high ability in forging strong partnerships, commerciality, influence and communications. You need to show that you understand the key elements of moving an already respected and effective charity to the next level of reach and impact, while holding onto our values-led culture and uncompromising focus on young people.

Closing date: 22nd November 2020.
