Trustee

Share your expertise as a Trustee of London’s most vibrant community for adopters

We Are Family (WAF) is an adoption community group providing opportunities for adoptive and prospective adoptive parents to meet and share experiences of parenthood. We strongly believe in and advocate supporting the parent to support the child. We also pride ourselves on being a parent to parent group offering not advice but a shared experience.

We have recently been successful in securing some substantial grants to help develop our capacity and sustainability, and to provide online services specifically tailored to the needs of our community in the current context.

We have now established a team of two members of staff to drive this work and provide a platform for the Trustees to lead WAF to an exciting new level.

We are looking to strengthen and enhance our board of trustees with new skills and ideas. We want to appoint new board members to help consolidate and broaden our influence and capacity to provide support for adoptive parents.

In particular we are seeking trustees with experience in one or more of the following areas:

professional experience of working with or in the adoption sector, preferably at a senior level;

  • Information Technology and/or Digital Media;
  • Human Resources;
  • a qualified lawyer;
  • a qualified or part qualified accountant with experience of financial management in any commercial or not-for-profit organisation.

Although many of our current trustees are adopters themselves, we are also keen to recruit suitably qualified people who are not, but who can demonstrate a commitment to the values and mission of WAF.

One of the great strengths of We Are Family is that it is volunteer and member driven, and that it represents a diverse community across London. We particularly welcome trustees from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds to ensure that the board can benefit from this diversity of experience. We would also welcome single adopters to the board.

Board meetings currently take place six times a year – currently these are conducted remotely but longer term we aim for at least four of these to involve attendance in person. Trustees are also expected to serve on at least one Board committee and will need to be able to do around 10 hours of work per month. The normal term of appointment for a trustee is three years.

If the opportunity to join an exciting, rapidly growing new charity appeals to you as someone able to make a valuable contribution, please send your CV and a covering e-mail setting out why you would like to join us and how you meet the requirements set out above to us via the link.

Closing date for applications is Sunday 1 November 2020.
