One Community Foundation - Chief Executive
One Community is one of 46 Community Foundations in the UK, covering the Kirklees area. The Foundation is an accredited member of the United Kingdom Community Foundations (UKCF).
It is a registered charity whose purpose is to enable and encourage local philanthropy. We work with individuals, families and companies to design bespoke grant making strategies that target particular issues or focus on particular geographical areas, with an emphasis on supporting grassroots community and volunteer organisations.
With the generosity and involvement of our donors we have distributed over £1,000,000 of grants to local organisations since 2010. Last year over 250 grants totalling over £300,000 were awarded. Towards the end of 2019 we received funding to expand our Voluntary Sector Support and earlier this year we dealt with a large amount of central funding for coronavirus related grants.
This growth has brought us to the point of needing a Chief Executive for the next phase of development. The CEO will be given full responsibility for planning and implementing this.
We are looking for an accomplished, inspirational, and strategic leader who is passionate about achieving impact. S/he will have a creative orientation and be able to cultivate a strong and nimble organisation eager to seize opportunities and invest in innovative ways. The successful candidate must possess the management and leadership skills necessary to lead the organisation through a time of growth, evolution and change.
S/he will have the ability to assess challenges of a changing community and, in partnership with the staff and Board of Trustees, develop and implement a vision for how the Foundation can engage and have continued impact. S/he will have a track record of success in a non-profit, private, or public enterprise with a diverse constituency and broad scope. The Chief Executive will collaborate effectively with the Board of Trustees, listening, informing, and contributing to a strategic vision, and taking responsibility for its implementation.
The Chief Executive holds the delegated overall responsibility for the effective running of the Foundation and, with support and guidance from the Chair and the Board of Trustees, is accountable for the Foundations’ performance.
The Chief Executive is responsible for: Strategic Development; Financial Management; Philanthropy and Fund Development; Staff Management; Grant-making, Quality Accreditation, relationship-building and delivery of the Foundation’s 5 Year Strategic Business Plan and Annual Business Goals within budget. The trustees give a high priority to fund development at this stage of the Foundation's evolution.
Whilst the Chief Executive will be responsible for all these areas it is not reasonable to expect one person to have the skills to cover all these areas let alone the time to do so and s/he will need to delegate through a mixed team, primarily employees and volunteers, but also trustees and supporters. The Board also recognises that the current staff structure will need to change and one of the early priorities will be to review this.
- Provide strategic and strong leadership in designing and delivering strategies and annual targets which will enable the Foundation to fulfil its objectives
- Oversee the continued growth and management of invested funds able to support long term grant giving,
- Establish, lead and manage an effective, efficient and relevant grant making process and programmes.
- Be responsible for the management and administration of the Foundation in the execution of the Board of Trustees' policies.
- Together with the Chair, enable the Board of Trustees to fulfil its functions and to ensure that the Board receives appropriate advice and information on all relevant matters.
- Lead and manage the Foundation team.
- Build sustainable relationships with community groups, other members of the 3rd sector and other providers of services to the Foundation.
- The Chairman and Board of Trustees will review the Chief Executive’s performance, job description and objectives regularly.
- Leadership of the Foundation and its recognisable public face
- To support the Board in developing the strategic direction of the Foundation.
- To develop and deliver business plans and work programmes and review progress with the Board.
- Increase awareness of the Foundation’s work by developing relationships and partnerships with other organisations, employers, individuals and the media.
- Develop opportunities for the future growth of the Foundation.
- To build a culture of local Philanthropy and developing Donor Services.
- To attract and secure substantial new funding and resources to ensure the future growth and sustainability of the Foundation including funding through the development of high net worth individual/family donors, public sector funding, corporate giving, and trusts and foundations.
- Develop and maintain high level relationships with new, existing and potential donors, influential persons and other external contacts thereby forming an effective ambassador network for the Foundation.
- Develop and implement an ambitious fund development strategy and targets, agreed with the Board of Trustees for endowment, flow-through funding and core running costs .
- Ensure appropriate systems are maintained and developed to implement the Foundation’s activities, monitor its performance and mitigate both financial and reputational risks.
- Ensure that the Foundation complies with all legal and regulatory requirements and works towards standards of excellence as agreed by the Charity Commission and the UK Community Foundation Network.
- Ensure the effective management and communication of grant-making programmes which meet the needs of target groups and the objectives and policies of the Foundation.
- Ensure the Foundation continues to develop expertise on local needs and social policy.
- Monitor the impact of grant making to ensure effective use of funds and inform future planning and research.
Staff & Volunteers
- Recruit, manage and motivate staff and volunteers, ensuring clear objectives and targets are set and provide on-going support, training, review and appraisal.
- Develop and oversee effective and efficient office, IT and accounting systems and records to meet the needs of the Foundation and to ensure compliance with statutory & regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and agree with Trustees an annual budget for the Foundation and ensure sound financial management.
- Work with the Foundation’s Investment Committee to ensure the Foundation's investment policy remains effective.
- Oversee the preparation of the Annual Report & Accounts and manage their production.
- Undertake all duties in compliance with the Trust’s equal opportunity, health and safety and other appropriate policies.
Voluntary Sector Support
- Organise and signpost Voluntary Organisations to other forms of support
- Work with business to explore their CSR wishes (volunteering and funding) and introduce them to relevant opportunities within the Voluntary Sector
Board and Trustees
- To work as a team with the Trustees and to prepare and present regular reports to the Board on the Foundation’s activities, progress towards targets and financial information.
- To develop and maintain an effective on-going induction and development programme for the Board members, ensuring that they are kept aware of their responsibilities and new developments in Foundation and charity best practices.
- Ensure that the Trustees are made aware of any relevant changes in charity and company law etc. related to their responsibilities, and that arrangements are in place to ensure these are discharged appropriately.
- Support the Chair to ensure diversity and range of skills in the Board of Trustees and grantmaking panels, reflecting best practice in selection and recruitment.
Experience – Essential
- Evidence of rounded general management skills and proven experience in a leadership role in a small team or organisation.
- Experience of building high-level relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the organisation.
- A track record in raising significant levels of funds from a range of donors including private, corporate, public and charitable sources.
- Experience of proposal writing and donor reporting.
Experience – Desirable
- Knowledge of Kirklees areas and potential donor network.
- Effective management of grant-making programmes.
- Knowledge and experience of working with the voluntary or corporate sectors or both.
- Financial and budgetary management.
- An understanding of good governance and the ability to work successfully with a board.
- Experience of staff and volunteer management – empowering people to get the best out of them.
- Strong & persuasive negotiator.
- Able to think strategically whilst converting policies into actions, anticipating growth and resource requirements.
- Able to identify opportunities and respond to them – willing to overcome obstacles in order to get results.
- Able to establish good interpersonal relationships, rapport and credibility with a wide range of people.

- Project Management – able to multi-task yet identify priorities.
- Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills. Exercises sound judgment in reaching decisions.
- Fully literate in Microsoft office

- Highly networked, with a demonstrable record of success initiating and fostering strategic partnerships with key external audiences–including public officials, foundation and private sector leaders, academic and community leaders.

Conditions of employment
Job title: Chief Executive
Remuneration: £40,000-£42,000, plus annual increments dependent on successful performance of targets agreed with the Board. 25 days annual leave per annum, in addition to public holidays.
Location: The post-holder will be based in the Foundation’s office in Huddersfield, but travel will be throughout Kirklees.
Transport: Car mileage allowance
Probationary period: six months
Notice period: three months
Accountability: Reports to the Chair and responsible to the Board of Trustees.
