Chief Executive, Humanity & Inclusion UK

c. £80k • based Central London

Humanity & Inclusion UK (HIUK) is part of a global network of federated charities operating under the HI banner. The network is composed of a Federation which implements our programmes in around sixty countries, an Institute of policy and research, and eight national associations, including one in the UK.

Founded nearly 40 years ago by two young French doctors outraged by the suffering they saw in post-conflict Cambodia, HI works in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. Running hundreds of projects in emergency, chronic crisis, reconstruction and development settings, we work tirelessly alongside disabled and vulnerable people to help meet basic needs, improve living conditions and promote respect for dignity and fundamental rights.

HIUK supports the organisation's programmes across the world by raising funds and providing technical support. We also manage the rehabilitation component of the UK Government's Emergency Medical Team, supporting a wide range of field programmes including emergency relief, demining, rehabilitation, and inclusive education. A major component of our work is in improving the way that disability data is collected and used in humanitarian action; we also influence disability and humanitarian policymaking, raise awareness and share our insights and perspectives as widely as possible.

Leading a small, expert team of advocates, project managers and fundraisers, our new Chief Executive will be the visible locus for all HI activity in the UK, and will be responsible to the Federation for integrating all UK activity into HI’s global strategic objectives. It’s an unusual, fascinating role, in which you’ll manage a range of key relationships – with funders, policymakers, disability campaigners and researchers, and many others. The UK has significant global prominence in shaping humanitarian and disability programmes worldwide, and HIUK is therefore able to leverage much greater influence and impact – amplified through our Federation network – than our small size might suggest.

It’s likely that you will have extensive experience of charity or not-for-profit leadership, and a sophisticated understanding of international development and / or disability issues would be a distinct asset. An accomplished fundraiser, with exceptional network- and relationship-building skills, you will be a clear, compelling communicator and will relish the opportunity to share our message as widely as possible. You’ll be a deft matrix manager, with a track record of motivating and leading dispersed teams to achieve highly effective outcomes. Finally, you must bring a powerful and persuasive commitment to our social and international mission, and a nuanced understanding of how to maximise the unique ‘multiplier effect’ created by our federated structure.
