About East London Arts & Music (ELAM)

ELAM is a world-class industry academy for talented 16-19 year olds to hone the skills they need to enter and then thrive in the creative industries. ELAM offers an unparalleled opportunity for these exceptional young people to lead successful lives within the music, games design and film and television sectors. We are diverse, we are multi-talented and we want to tell the stories that inspire and change lives.

Our vision is for the creative industries to accurately reflect society so there is diversity of content, diversity of thought and an explosion of untapped talent contributing to what is already one of the big UK success stories. The creative industries in the UK continue to do well and are currently worth £92 billion to the economy, while growing at more than double the speed of the wider economy.

However, unlike many other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs and therefore there is often a lack of diversity within these sectors. Increasing the access routes to everyone will therefore increase the quality of talent and the continued growth of the sector long-term. It will maintain the UK’s edge and it will do the vital job of ensuring the UK is able to tell stories and create content that reflects and inspires its diverse population.  We require a strategic leader to create the partnerships and secure the funds for this vision to become a reality and for ELAM to share their learning and their impact with other institutions so we can collectively level up.

ELAM is proud of its East London heritage and seeks to achieve this vision by providing industry standard courses for our trainees in Music, Games Design and Film and Television. We have partnerships with sector-leading organisations including YouTube, Universal Music and Creative Assembly that have allowed us to develop a curriculum that brings industry into the studios and games labs and  that facilitates connections between our young people and experienced creatives. In addition, all trainees at ELAM develop their spoken and written communication as well as their ability to analyse data and problem solve.

ELAM received an OFSTED ‘Outstanding' grade in every category in May 2017. While this is a huge achievement and something that we are immensely proud of, we are also still a long way from meeting our vision. There is still a lot of work to do and as a school that has a unique and singular mission we are restless in the pursuit of achieving this. We genuinely would like to re-write the rule book on how young creatives can access and then change the creative industries.

Please do read the person specification below as it should give you a good summary of what life at ELAM is like and what to expect. ELAM is an exciting place to work and different from many other institutions - it manages to be simultaneously ambitious and yet still caring. Our staff culture is incredibly important to us and is one of our key strengths. This is held together by a shared approach to working really hard but also an acknowledgement that our work and relationships as a team should and can be fun.

If you’re excited by this then please do apply as you will get the chance to come in and meet the team and get a feel for what we do in person.

Best wishes,

Matt Sheldon - Principal

Role Purpose & Description

We are ELAM and we want to change the face of the creative industries by having them reflect society. We envision diversity of content, diversity of thought and an explosion of untapped talent contributing to what is already one of the big UK success stories. We are looking for someone to spearhead the partnerships and unlock the funding that will allow talented young creatives to access and then change the creative industries. We are looking for a brilliant and creative Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships to lead this work. They will be able to work with high net worth individuals, with existing and new corporate partners and will build a platform to work with trusts and foundations. This role is for an experienced fundraiser who has successfully managed and closed six figure sums, is confident building and maintaining relationships and that is excited about our vision.

The Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships is a new role within the organisation and we hope will be pivotal as we set ELAM up with the resources and partnerships that it needs for success over the next five years. We would like the creative industries to see the opportunity ELAM represents to them. Our talent, our diversity, our professional culture, our vision and our ability to collaborate mark us out as a unique proposition for many of the best industry partners. The Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships will find the best ways to secure partnerships based on a shared vision and win-win outcomes for all involved.

Despite this, ELAM currently raises just 5% of it’s annual income through fundraising and this role will develop the strategy of how to maximise our potential and then execute against it.
