With 10 years to achieve Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goal 6 on access to water, sanitation and hygiene is among the furthest behind. Achieving universal, sustainable access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene will require a major mobilisation of resources, public demand and political will. Challenges such as confronting the climate crisis or securing global health in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic are starkly bringing into focus the urgent need for sustainable public services to protect us all, and especially the poorest and most vulnerable people who are being left behind.

We are looking for an exceptional and strategic leader to become WaterAid's Global Policy and Research Director, with proven track record of leading global teams to achieve ambitious policy change in challenging political contexts. The successful candidate will be a recognised, credible thought leader, with extensive experience in international development covering water, sanitation and hygiene issues (especially the agenda around strengthening the WASH sector), development economics, economic justice and inclusion and equality.

Excellent communication and influencing skills, and the ability to convey complex ideas and robust policy positions simply and compellingly are essential, as well as experience in representing organisations at senior technical levels across multiple networks including governments, international institutions, think tanks, research bodies and key opinion formers.

This role requires someone who thrives in collaborative working environments, working effectively across functions and geographies, to bring together diverse groups of people and with other senior leaders to achieve WaterAid's ambitious mission. The candidate will have demonstrable experience of working at a senior level in global organisations.

Candidates will need to have experience in matrix, remote or distance management, with the ability to coach, motivate and develop a high performing team to deliver change. You'll be joining a 2020 Great Place to Work® award-winning organisation.

The post can be based in London, Delhi, Addis Ababa , Kigali, Dakar or Pretoria.

UK salary: £68k-£75k subject to experience, with excellent benefits. Salary and benefits for other countries will vary in line with that WaterAid country's salary scale.

We are unable to provide sponsorship or relocation costs for this post. In order to apply for this post, you must be able to demonstrate your eligibility to work in London / Delhi / Addis Ababa / Kigali / Dakar / Pretoria.
