Job Details

We are passionate about seeing the people of Durham Diocese flourish. We rejoice in all the region has achieved over the centuries. We are excited for the future, and delight in the present as we glimpse God at work in people’s lives. As Christians we are called to love our neighbour, to be the hands and feet of Jesus, going and touching, being transformed even as we see transformation around us. This role is about both the going and the touching, it is about using your skills and gifts to make a difference, it is about responding to God’s call to love.

The Sustainability Manager will be responsible for supporting our ‘Communities of Hope’ on a journey to financial sustainability and replication. This will be achieved through the development of a multiple income stream strategy, to include grant applications, social enterprise, corporate sponsorship, generous giving, and local fund raising. A briefing paper with more details can be found in the appendix of the job description.
The post holder will manage and support all aspects of the agreed sustainability strategy as a key member of a supportive team. They will be proactive in the development of a prayerful culture, encouraging faith sharing and storytelling. She/he will take an entrepreneurial approach to social enterprise opportunities, planning, communications, governance, monitoring and reporting. A seed capital budget of £100,000 will be available to support the establishing of social enterprises over this period.

Initially we are launching seven Communities fully funded for their first three years, then partially funded for a further two years with a total budget of £2,062,993. We anticipate doubling this number of communities to fourteen over the five years. This funding largely relates to posts, though in some cases includes the leasing of suitable property. The diocese has used ‘Shildon Alive’ as the model for sustainability, a church-based project that has attracted over £1m in secular funding over an eight-year period. These Communities will be located in ‘low income’ towns and cities across the former Durham Coalfields and ship building areas.
